Yeah isn't there a warning light that's been telling you it's on the blink for weeks now?

    Hmm, could be very possible.

Some peoples heating runs off their gas I would imagine and not their electricity, as for how many days they take off at Hogmanay I would imagine its around the same as they take off at Christmas.

My hot water comes from my gas boiler

Not everyone has neighbours they are on decent terms with.

So does mine, but in an outage of gas, I heat water in the kettle, use electric heaters, I'm not sure why neighbours don't get on, I must count myself lucky.

Oh what bad luck I would have thought they may have emergency cover but I wouldn't expect them to be working for example to replace a battery. How long would a battery or meter change usually take, do they have no warning? Seems a bit dodgy if they can just fail what if it was an elderly or frail person?

    This is a long shot.

Try either CAB (if they're open) or your local DNO

Your DNO is different to your supplier in most cases. Your DNO is based on your geographic location.

Pre payments meters run on batteries? WHAT? I didn't know that. How do you know when it's on its way out? Do they all have them? Is there some kind of warning on them?

    Are electric meters the same?

I do think it's bad that there is nobody to help. Yes, everyone is entitled to a Christmas break, but there is normally emergency out-of-hours help.

Hope you get it fixed soon OP.

    Good news: Scottish Power closed
Bad news: It's only temporary, they'll be open tomorrow.
You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'

It's my understanding that these meters display "battery low" upon being topped up for some time before the batteries fail entirely.

I am no expert but this says meters do normally give some indication of state of battery

    https://customerservices.npower.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/129

The display on my gas meter is showing ‘Battery low’. What do I need to do?

This means your battery is running low and will soon need to be replaced. You do not need to do anything as a message will be sent to us when you charge your card and an engineer will call to replace your battery within the near future.
Depending on the location of your gas meter, the representative may need access to your property. If it is located in an outside meter box, which is freely accessible, the work can be carried out without the need for you to be present. Otherwise the work will need to be carried out at a time when access to your meter is possible.

also SP rep says this in this post http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.php?p=37819768&postcount=9

Your battery warning light will come on around 6 weeks before the battery actually fails. This gives you enough time to contact your supplier and arrange for the battery to be changed. It makes no sense in allowing the battery to fail then leaving the customer with no gas until such time that the battery is changed. I am not aware of any supplier having this as their policy.
