Company only accepts Credit Cards, no debit.

Is there any reason why a company offering a 6 month reduced-price trial of its product should stipulate that only credit cards are accepted?
I was under the impression that debit cards were normally preferred.
Thanks in advance

im not sure
but i know of a furniture store that will not accept credit cards, only debit cards, and is then very difficult if a customer has a problem and requests a refund. they do not want their customers to be helped by credit card companies.0 -
Age checking? Don't know what company you're referring to.
What about Mastercard debit cards? Some companies might just say credit cards on their sites but do accept debit cards also?0 -
Who is the company?
Have you googled them to see if there are any posts on there about them?0 -
Some shops/services stipulate credit cards only to ensure you are over a certain age.but i know of a furniture store that will not accept credit cards, only debit cards, and is then very difficult if a customer has a problem and requests a refund. they do not want their customers to be helped by credit card companies.
You can still get charge back and Section 75 cover even if you use a debit card, if you are careful.0 -
If it is a product trial, then presumably at the end of the trial period there is a full charge which you have to pay (unless you go through some sort of cancellation procedure which they are hoping you'll forget to do). Some people might hope to get out of this automatic charge by just cancelling their card. If you use a credit card, the account will just get reopened (so the merchant will be paid). If you use a debit card it's not so straightforward - if you've completely closed the bank account then the merchant might not be able to take their money.0

Well, what do you know. I did Google them, and they certainly are mentioned. Not a very savory company. Lots of negative feedback. I shall be asking for a refund, as their TOS said I could cancel anytime.jonesMUFCforever wrote: »Who is the company?

If it's cut price, then you won't be able to get a refund, just close account.

Could it be something to do with CPAs? They want you to sign up for something which will involve sums being charged later. Perhaps their experience of CCs is that they more likely to get their money down the line.0

Name and shame
If they are not a very savory company with lots of negative feedback, then it might well help others out and bring up this post in a search.0 -
There are a number of reasons:
1) Age verification - in theory you must be over 18 to have a credit card but can have a debit card at a younger age
2) Cost - credit cards charge a percentage where as debit cards are a fixed per transaction fee. For big purchases credit cards are much more expensive for the merchant but for tiny ones credit cards can be cheaper
3) CPA - certainly used to be the case that you were only supposed to do a continuous payment authority against credit cards as for a debit card it should be a DD instead. Reality is that it is possible to do a CPA against debit cards but perhaps the merchant doesnt want to run the risk
4) Section 75 - guess some could be under the perception that with section 75 protection that you are as likely to pursue your card issuer as you are them if something goes wrong and so it doesnt impact them. Of cause a bank has a right of recovery from the merchant if they've paid out under section 75 but how frequently that happens I dont know. Of cause this is only relevant if the payments are high enough to get section 75 protection
5) Its wrong - I have seen things before state that you need to use a credit card but have successfully used my Visa Debit with them0
