Someone opening letterbox?

When you go out you could leave a camera on a tripod pointing at the front door. It doesn't need to be connected to anything to make someone peeping through think twice about showing more of themselves.I am the Cat who walks alone0

Definitely not kids as I went straight to the door and there was no one in the street apart from a car parked next to our house with the engine on.
I just rang 101 and I'm really impressed. She took all the details and agreed it seemed suspicious and is sending a bobby around at 6 tonight to have a chat and reassure me :O0 -
Why don't you as a short term solution for tomorrow just tape it shut with some duct tape? It's unlikely the postman will be calling tomorrow so you won't miss any post! Our first baby due 25th May 2014 :T

You could use those cupboard/window alarms, that would go off when the letter box was opened, you could also leave the downstairs lights on and the radio/television on so it would be audible to anyone opening the letter box.
If you have a webcam, you could put it in view of the letter box, doesn't need to be turned on, but make it look like it is plugged in, or the same with a camera so it suggests that if there is a peeker, they are being recorded.0 -
Thanks for all the tips. Think so far we're going to tape the letterbox closed, leave TV on and a couple of lights (we don't have a radio). OH has also suggested using the cerberus app on his tablet, where if he placed it right it he could take pictures of the living room for peace of mind, or if someone does enter he could take pictures of them. Not so sure how I feel about that as surely his tablet would be taken, but then again we'd have photos of them.0

Timer switches might be good, so that your tv / lights etc come on and switch themselves off at certain times. They cost about £5.

It's obviously too late for an amazon delivery, but you can usually get them in hardware shops. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I taped my letter box shut after someone tried to put their hand through to reach my keys. Luckily I have a separate mail box so it's not a problem. The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt.Bertrand Russell0

I can't explain why you heard your letterbox, although you sound quite sure there was no-one there. Do you think it could have been the person in the car? I'd have been tempted to approach them and ask if they had just knocked the door. I do agree with the suggestions though, leave radio or tv or something on, that way if someone is opening it and listening then they'll think someone is home. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.0

The wind does this to mine - I have taped it shut in the past (not that the postie appreciated it)0
