Car Purchase

Hi All - looking to buy a new car. looking to spend between 10-14k

I'm paranoid about buying a dud - which is why i want to go trade rather than private.

I'm also going to pay for the AA to check the car over (think its about £50).

Any other suggestions - or will the 'warranty' from a garage be good enough?

thanks in advance

£50.. How many years ago was that? 1946?

FROM £128 £142 for non members.

If your spending £10 - £14k why not save all the hassle and buy something new if your that worried?

Only my opinion, but you could go and buy a new Bentley from the show room and its a total lemon or a £500 hatchback that runs for 10 years without a problem. There is a lot of luck involved in running/buying cars.

Likewise, all the checks, service history, warranty, etc do not mean you won't end up stuck on the side of the road on a cold wet night - it just happens.

You can skew the odds a little bit in you favour, but the just throwing more money at it (and in dealer's pockets!) is not the only way.

Look at JD Power survey and other *independent data* on which brands and models are most reliable. Be guided by that and just spend what you can afford.

I personally just buy cheap (<£1,000) and get rid of them when they play up too much. I can barely get my head around spending £10k - £14k on a single car.
Would you say that to a stranger's face in the street? No? Then why type it on a forum?

We really need more information here to give a balanced opinion.

For example, what sort of car are you looking to buy? How old are you looking at? £10k to £14k is a pretty big price range, so how fixed are you in what you want? You could buy a Porsche Boxster for about £12k and then put a proper Porsche warranty on it for about £700. (not very MSE maybe, but an example of what could be available for the price mentioned). Or, you could buy brand new any number of small hatchbacks.

£10k to £14k could get you a nearly new small car, in which case you'll get what's left of the full manufacturer's warranty, regardless of where you buy it from.

But, if you want a car more than say 3 years old, again buy from approved dealer and you should get a pretty good warranty.

If you do the above you won't need to spend on an AA or other inspection.

Another option is to buy private and get a manufacturer's warranty put on it after the qualifying period, usually 30 days.

Or as said, spend £1k and bank the rest for any possible problems.

Unless its a premium brand, your budget should buy you a car thats still under manufacturers warranty.

Yes just buy an approved used car which will still be under warranty and have been checked out properly, but unless you're after something particular you would comfortably get a new car for that money. Also nothing wrong with private sellers, its the independent used outlets who most often sell crap cars.

Agree, personally I would always sell my cars privately, I would only ever trade in if I thought there was a problem with the car, and I could get some comeback.

  • Hi - sorry for late reply!

it's a Jaguar XF that I am after. Can get an 09/10 one for around 14k

Never thought of putting a manufacturers warranty on after purchase (had neve even heard of that)

Don't really like any new cars in that price range and trying to only buy with cash so dont want to (cant) go any higher

If you want the jaguar approved used car warranty you probably need a main dealer. £`14k may be something with a fair few miles on the clock.

Hope you put plenty away for tyres and servicing.

You can put a Jaguar Warranty on any car under 100k miles and under three years old apparently.

Looking into it for my XJ

The 3.0 diesel is a better long term prospect than the 2.7

If you do lowish mostly urban miles i would be tempted to avoid the dpf problems and go for a 3.0v6 petrol.

Should be able to source a decent three yr old with above average miles for the top of your budget or a 2.7 diesel with 100k for nearer the bottom of your budget.

Don't forget that they still have Jaguar sized bills.

The 112k service on an XJ 3.0d is over £1000 as it includes the cambelt.

Though i suspect any Citreon specialist will hsve no issues as the same engine is fitted to the C6.

Motorguy will have a coronary but to get an idea on prices there are several on CarGiant.

You could use these prices to negotiate or travel down there to buy.

    Your choice on that

If you are non savvy with cars then an AA or RAC inspection could be a good idea.

If you can get an extended Jaguar Warranty, check with the Jaguar website, it has the advantage of giving access to Jaguar Assistance. They can arrange roadside repair or recovery snd free hire cars via Enterprise. You pay a £50 refundable deposit and have the option of £5 a day full liability waiver for excess and damage.

I had a Disco4 for a most of a week which was nice. Whilst Jag fixed a leaking thermostat housing under warranty
