Stolen cheque cashed- help!

Hi all,
Not sure where best to place this in the forum, but I've had a cheque in my name stolen and cashed, so just wondering if there are any wise words of wisdom- I'd be very grateful if so... To explain the background:
MoreThan sent me a cheque for a pet insurance claim that I didn't receive. On 8th November we got a note through our door from Royal Mail saying post from our area had been stolen earlier in the week.
After putting 2+2 together, I called MoreThan on 14th November who confirmed the cheque had been sent and was likely in the batch of mail that was stolen based on the dates. I asked them to cancel the original cheque and re-issue which they agreed to do.
On 2nd December I still hadn't received my re-issued cheque so called MoreThan who advised that the person I had spoken to on 14th Nov had given the wrong policy number and hadn't responded to an internal query, so nothing had moved on. They corrected this and informed me the process would now be in place.
Today (23rd December) I still hadn't received the cheque, so called MoreThan again, and was informed that the cheque hadn't been re-issued because it had in fact been cashed on 6th November.
The cheque was in my name, so I don't understand how it was cashed? Although after some research today, I see it might be possible to cash at one of those 'instant cash' places with a utility bill, and am now concerned that there was another piece of relevant mail in the lot that was stolen, that means this person has been able to cash the cheque.
MoreThan are tracing who cashed the cheque, but of course this may take a while.
Is there any advice on anything I should do in this scenario? I would like to ensure I do receive the money (obviously!) and also to make sure I can make it clear it wasn't me who cashed the cheque as I'm concerned they may have also had a utility bill.
With many thanks in advance

First thing - ask Morethan for a copy of front and back of cheque.
This will show where the cheque was banked - sort code and account number.
IMO it will be the bank that took the cheque in who will have to refund you.
You will need to liaise with the insurer as to whom is to approach the bank. You are right it will not be resolved soon but maybe arrange for next payment to be sent direct to your bank account.0 -
Thank you, that's helpful advice- very much appreciated0
