Not sure if this is old style, or christmas thread but would appreciate some advice/reassurance.
Tesco order came last night and I had ordered a large turkey crown (free range) for christmas dinner. However, its weight is 2kg and on it, it says "3-4 people". For dinner we are having 5 or 6 adults and 2 kids (age 10 and 6). That sounds a little scary but: 1 adult has not yet rsvp'd so may not event come , another is an elderly gran who barely eats , and also MIL and DIL have very small portions . My kids are also not mad about turkey and prefer the associated trimmings. We have a choice of 2 starters, and 2 puddings. If I serve the turkey with the following sides, do you think this is doable?
- roast potatoes
- roast parsnips
- 20 sage and onion stuffing balls
-6 fancy stuffing balls (may only be OH and I that eat these as others are very fussy and only like traditional as above)
- 20 little sausages wrapped in bacon
- sprouts and carrots
does this sound ok?
I dont need any leftover turkey as we are leaving for my mums on boxing day and freezer is pretty full!
thanks xx

A Turkey that says 3-4 will do 3 realistically.
You want to potentially feed 8, so I think you will seriously struggle.
You certainly wont have any leftover Turkey.0 -
It will be fine! Just make sure you have plenty of potatoes, veg etc. Obviously it may not be generous portions but chippolatas can make up for that! I would portion before serving. If really worried take a trip to the supermarket tomorrow evening and pick a bargin.0

I think if I was in doubt about how many it would feed I would cook it the day before allow to cool and put in the fridge that way you can slice the meat much more thinly when it is cold than you can when it is hot.
I would reheat on the day bu putting in a pyrex dish and covering with either gravy or turkey stock cover with foil and pop it in the bottom of the oven for 30 mins while the potatoes and veg are in, it will stretch much further this way.
I would also plate up everything in the kitchen rather than having serving dishes on the table or certainly plate up the turkey, sausages and stuffing balls and just have the veg in serving dishes for people to help themselves. It is much easier to control the portions this way.
Finally enjoy it and remember it is only one course of one meal and with plenty of veg and potatoes and a starter and pud everyone will be more than satisfied. :beer:1 Sealed Pot Challenge # 1480

you could get a fresh turkey at a reduced cost if you go to the supermarket about 3-3.30pm. you might have to wait about a bit. i did last year and got a turkey for £7 from £21.Cats don't have owners - they have staff!!DFW Long Hauler Supporter No 1500

If your worried I'd nip to farmfoods for a turkey crown £9.95
any leftovers make a pie. I'd rather have to much then not enough especially at crimbo.

I think you'll be fine....aslong as theres plenty of sides everyone should get enough to eat0
-
i think it should be fine, put it this way you've already got more stuffing and pigs in blankets than me!
They are four adults and 2 children aged 13 and 9 yrs for christmas this year.
We have a small chicken and a small piece of smoked gammon, cocktail sausages with bacon wrapped around them.
Myself and OH pad everything out with veg and sides.
so carrots, turnip, broccoli, roasties, mash, sprouts for FIL and my dad, yorkshire puddings all served with gravy and stuffing.
Deserts, no idea, prob some cake.
My children / family are awkward so i serve everything in individual dishes and just dish themselves. The meat we cut and place on the plate. don't forget to boil the bones of the turkey will make some lovely stock for soup or risotto.
We normally have meat left over as well for fajitas and things, not loads but enough.
Try not to stress and enjoy the meal, after all you have deserts! so they will soon fill up0 -
You should be ok, but personally I would add a small gammon in there an extra slice of meat should stretch it out and they are available for around £5, or even less if you shop when the staff are doing the reductions.

If you don't want to spend more money on meat then I would add in some mashed potato and maybe Yorkshire pudds. If guests are there a while before meal offer biscuits and buns so they not as hungryHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0
