Use spray-on furniture polish for tails instead of the pricey preparations you get in tack shops, it has the same effects - degreasing, restoring lightness and detangling.
    Use an old
waterproof sleeping bag or buy a cheap new one ... remove the zip and cut out a semi-circular section at one end (it maybe best to trace round a well fitting rug) then stitch round the edges, you can add a coloured binding if you like, use strips of velcro for breast straps
*personalise your rugs by making letters out of felt them stitching them on to the corner
    ,or embroidering

If you need to soak a smallish quantity of hay, try using a plastic babies bath.
You can feed the wet hay straight from the bath.

Great to see horsey folk on MSE! I sadly have not had a horse for a few years now although I am hoping to remedy that in 4 years time when I have paid off my debt and saved enough for something small, hardy and bombproof! I was just wondering if you knew where the best place would be to sell a few horsey things I still have lying around. There is a mix of things a bridle, haynets, boots, travel bandages and saddle stands. I was thinking maybe e-bay or Gumtree but wondered if you had any other recomendations?

I usually sell on ebay or at horse sales (though be careful at those - its very easy to wander into the horse section.....!)

good luck!! Ive not got a horse at the moment - but hoepfullky I will get the ok to ride again on Friday ( I broke my neck a year and a half ago in a racing fall) then I can think about saving for one.....

    Hello all

Does anyone have any reccs for cheap horse rugs? or rather good quality rugs at reduced prices?

My (darling) 5yo has outgrown most of the extensive (and expensive) wardrobe I purchased last year

and oldie could do with a couple of new snuggly rugs for the winter

    Thanks, mills x

I usually look online for rugs including ebay......

Also worth checking the notice board at your local tack shop and some of the big tack shops do special discount days at this time of year:D

Sometimes it's better value to buy one good quality "all in" rug than three cheaper rugs as they last and work better and as bonus if your youngster is still growing you can sell them on when he outgrows them!

BTW, I swear by the Fal Pro Viking rugs but they ain't cheap and they very rarely come up secondhand!

  • Hello horsey poeple!

My dad was a very sensible money saving person when I was younger and wouldn't let me have a horse or even lessons (except as birthday presents or when we were on holiday) but now I'm (unfortunately) old enough that I pay for things myself and my dad no longer minds the idea of me getting a horse!

I've really landed on my feet and am sharing a 15H3 big brown 17yo gelding (I'm not very technical) just at weekends for the cost of his shoes. His mum is wonderful and has every confidence in me so every time I call her in a panic (he's trotting too fast, he's got a splinter, his fly suit has a puddle under his tummy, I can't find ... etc), by the end of the phonecall everyhting is alright again.

I want to get im a new thing to stop the flies going in his eyes, he keeps loosing the one he has in his field, and it's a really big field and usually takes about 30mins to find it again, so a spare would be good and also he must have trodden on it lots of something cost it's looking pretty shabby. First problem - what it is called?! it covers his ears too and just does up under his chin with velcro and has mesh over his eyes. I call it his fly eyes thing, and his mum knows what I mean, but google doesn't! Also what is the recommended price range for one of these gizmos and what are the size options for it?

    Thanks all! x

But ensure the two are not connected!
