Vegetarian Christmas Dinner

I'd ask her mum what she's usually given on Xmas Day .... she might be a faddy eater.0
-
not doing turkey - beef and pork.
and her mum has never done a Christmas dinner - she always comes to my house!
she isn't a faddy eater - but she has been vegetarian for nearly a year. its her first Christmas as a veggie.0 -
My Mum makes the most delicious home made stuffing (using vegetable-based suet). I don't know the exact recipe I'm afraid, it has been passed down the generations and not yet to me, my participation in the past has only gone as far as endlessly picking the leaves off twigs of thyme. Other ingredients onion, breadcrumbs, egg, sage, salt and pepper?
Anyway, she bakes one batch of stuffing with pieces of Quorn in it for the veggies. Along with vegetarian gravy, it's absolutely lovely. Having said that, veggies in our clan have been known to eat roast potatoes cooked in goose fat without too much complaint :-).

I've been veggie for 25 years. I have the Delia parsnip roulade for Xmas dinner and wouldn't dream of something as humdrum (to a veggie) as nut roast.
The carnivores love it too.

Then they aren't vegetarians. Nor should those catering for them think that is in any way okay. :mad:Trying to be a man is a waste of a woman0 -
It wasn't intentional by either the caterer or the vegetarians. And they didn't complain when we all realised because someone had worked very hard to try to accommodate them as best as they could. I imagine all vegetarians have mistakenly eaten some animal product at some point.
I have heard that lack of meat can make some people very opinionated and self-righteous ;-).

I'm not a huge fan of nut roast. I'd be happier with redwoods sage and onion slices. You can get them in morrisons.0

Red cabbage - we put orange in, a squirt of juice and a little zest. A few winter spices are also nice - cinnamon and clove and a splash of red wine.
Regarding nut roasts - when I was vegetarian I tried to make one but never got it to be as good as a shop bought one. If you want to have a stab at it, it will need a lot of salt - possibly something with body like soy sauce - lots of herbs and flavourings and a fair amount of fat to hold it together and be satisfying. I recommend just buying a Granose one TBH.
That said, I really recommend a vegetarian haggis. They are amazing and you could spoon it into a baking dish and cook it like a nut roast/stuffing. We have one every burns night alongside the meaty version and it is very moresish.
Enjoy your dinner!0 -
Yeah, veggie haggis is very very nice indeed. As are some veggie sausages. Vegusto do some really amazing burgers and they are vegan.0
