Small desktops?

My laptop has died on me and I currently alternating between my ipad and an old laptop.

I've decided that I want a desktop, which means I can have a bigger monitor. Laptops of 17" are getting harder and harder to get hold of.

There's a slight issue of size - I don't have a huge amount of space in my bedroom. I don't want (or need) a fast desktop. Just something for playing music, web browsing and some word processing.

My budget is up to £500. Can anyone recommend a small desktop please? I've had a look online and some of the desktops are too big.

Doesn't matter if it's bundle with a monitor. I can buy the monitor by itself.

Thank you

Go for something like this .... (they can be clipped on the back of a monitor, takes up no space at all).

Perhaps an SFF (Small Form Factor) PC, for example:

Thanks. That's looks really good. Not quite how small I was expecting to go!

If you want an absolute stonking deal and you're happy to obtain your own copy of Windows get this for £149..

Got 2 of these in the last month for friends, put a copy of Windows 7 on and they fly. Very good performance and it's in a SFF case.

Bundle it with something like this Samsung 24" monitor for £109 and you are laughing.

Thanks for all the replies. I talked to my brother and he has suggested building one.

I would go with Stompa's suggestion, but through their Outlet

You can get a Certified Refurb Mini-Tower with 4GB RAM for £238 with a 3 Year Basic Warranty or a new one for £265. 2 GB RAM for £227.

You can move up to an i3 for £290, though you may want another stick another RAM in, so say £300.

The Slim Tower kicks in at £271 with the 3 Year warranty.

All with Windows 8 Pro and downgrade rights to Windows 7.

Don't think you'll be able to build one for less.

What is actually wrong with your current machine?

I'e been running a Dell Inspiron Zino HD for a few years now, would never go back to a full size pc, by the way we use laptops at work, but simply plug in a keyboard, mouse and 2 screens to work all day with.

I've just replaced the charger and battery. Can't charge the battery and the charger (which is Dell) isn't recognised by the laptop. Well, sometimes it will recognise it.

And there's a vertical red line down one side of the screen. Been told this isn't good.

I've had trouble with it for a while now. It doesn't always charge and doesn't always turn on.

good grief, these days in this economy with demand falling fast on desktop machines, sky is limit with £500; you could have pretty much anything you wanted, but then I build them so I'd save on the labour. you want an I7 chip at that price, yes sir you do- you want 8 gigs ram, 64 bit os, easily achievable, don't settle for less, remember - i7, 6 plus gigs ram..... and you want a terabyte HD too
