OS Daily Thread Sunday 22nd December

Options
OS DAILY - Sunday 22nd December 2013 This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” is fine.
Chin up, Titus out.

  • Morning all
Up at silly o'clock here, I've unloaded the DW & made a cuppa & taken one up for hubby, I shall feed the fish once they are awake.
Yesterday I cooked & dismantled a turkey, in between trying to help DD2 who was trying to get herself & 3 children to a wedding without a car, between us DD1 & I got everything sorted. Hubby worked 8 'til 1, then I collected him & we went to buy the water for the fish tank, then I took him back again & collected him at 6:30, he did it for free to help the Gym club that DGD2 belongs too. I also washed the last of the mugs from work, 87 in total. They are in boxes in the spare room until a decision is made as to whether or not we are allowed to keep a mug at work or not!
Today I'd like a lazy day, but it probably won't happen, lol.
Right, the fish are awake & tapping on the glass, so best feed them.
Take care, have a lovely day everyone.
    Hugs Hester
    Chin up, Titus out.

Hi Hester and everyone who follows,

Wow, I'm not usually compos mentis enough to post at this hour but I couldn't sleep and have been up for ages. I have a batch of frangipane topped mince pies in the oven. I usually make the pastry for them but cheated this time and bought ready made sweet shortcrust. Home made mincemeat from last year though.

DD was on the train to Glasgow yesterday sat at the next table to Peter Capaldi. She has met and seen an awful lot of celebs in her jobs so I am a bit surprised about how excited she was at this spot.

We had a lovely afternoon yesterday, not what we had planned but we wandered round Skipton looking in all the little quirky shops (and not buying, hurrah).

So today we have to decorate the tree, I need to make another batch of mince pies and I want to try a recipe for chocolate and pistachio biscotti DH found in Booths. Then it's over to sis-in-laws in time to go to her churches carol service.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Morning

Thanks for starting the thread HH

Up early as couldn't sleep , I usually get up for work at 6 and it's hard to sleep past then even though I desperately want to.

The cats fed and currently washing itself on my knee.

I'm taking DD2 to work at meadowhall and if I can park I will pop in and try and get a Xmas present for DH , although I have no idea what to get him

Have a good day everyone xx
  • Good morning all, cold and wet , very wet here this morning. This cold damp weather is playing havoc with my joints and I have fibromyalgia and Ra so very stiff and painful. Have taken this mornings tablets , hope they kick in soon.
How's everyone's plans for Christmas going ? All present shopping and wrapping done , tesco delivery arranged for this morning with what I hope is 99% of shopping for the coming week , leaving just a couple if bits from lidls to get later today or tomorrow. Am normally still running round like a headless chicken Christmas Eve but hhis year should be a quiet eve , well I'm hoping . Toad in the hole with mash and veggies for dinner this evening followed by creamy rice pud done in the slow cooker. Right off to put kettle on and first load of washing , have warm safe Sundays everyone xx

    Morning everyone.
Still in bed, but I need to get up soon! Can hear that it's raining outside...
Had my mum over yesterday afternoon for coffee and we watched an Alan Carr stand up. Very funny!
Afterwards we had a drive round our whole estate looking at everyone's outdoor decorations. Some were lovely and one was just over the top!
Jobs for today are cleaning and tidying the house from top to bottom ready for Christmas, since we are both at work Monday and Tuesday.
I also need to bake some fairy cakes ready to take into work on Tuesday.
I also need to put WM on.
Got some chicken in the fridge in Nando's marinade so that's for tea tonight with some chips and garlic bread.
I should probably make a move to get up I think!
    Hope you are all well.
Jools - I hope you are doing ok.

    Good Morning :)

Yesterday was manic, I made 60 mince pies and 12 portions of chilli. I had a play date and had friends over for a few hours!!

Today we were supposed to have Christmas with Mum, but she's sick so we're postponing until next Sunday now. So today we have the day off!

I'm going to pop to MrS and buy some puff pastry to make some mincemeat pastries with my leftover mincemeat (without the hassle of making the pastry myself, which I normally do)

    http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2175/barneys-rolypoly-mince-pies

Then we're going to watch Christmas DVDs :)

And as we didn't eat the chilli yesterday, we're having it today! So an easy day :)

Hope everyone has a great day x

    Morning everyone

Jools - thinking of you and your family today x

Hugs to all those that are feeling sad/poorly x

Still very dark here, but sounds quite blustery.

DH, myself and DS2 all awake and enjoying first cuppas of the day. DS1 still in his pit - in fairness, he did get up stupid early yesterday and go to work with his dad to earn a bit of cash.

Went to the SM first thing yesterday morning thinking it would be rammed and although there were people coming and going - the car park was only half full and I didn't queue to come through the checkouts at all - it re-affirms my thinking that people here just don't have the money this year.

Went to visit my friend was great to see her again and she hadn't told me before I visited but her lovely DH got made redundant on 2 December - he'd been at the company for over 18 years - so is getting a good redundancy payout - but they only moved to a really lovely big house a couple of years ago - fortunately they both have their heads screwed on and he has already been searching and getting the word out he's looking for work and an old boss from the company he's just been made redundant from has been in touch (the old boss got out a few years ago - sounds like he made a wise move!) and her DH has got another job - it is only a year's contract but he starts on 2 Feb- but it is in his particular line of expertise. She got made redundant whilst on maternity leave with her lovely DS2 just over a year ago - so she's not working at the moment either - but she did seem happier and calmer by the time I left. I had planned a quick visit as she'd got to go out in the afternoon - but stayed longer as she needed a shoulder. Made a me think that I need to make a better effort - so will get Xmas and New Year out of the way then will get in touch and arrange a Sunday lunch/Saturday night dinner for us to go there or them to come here - but making sure she realises that we will do it on a budget - sharing the cost. We have another mutual friend who has pots of money (money left to her from deceased parents) that spends money like it's water and always tries to go 1 better than everyone else and this doesn't make my friend feel very good about herself as she feels she can't compete etc, especially at the moment.

I finished up taking the boys over to their great grandad's yesterday afternoon - he rang here in a panic as DH visited and he'd forgotten he should have stayed in and was out at the time - so then was saying he was in a muddle and had stuff that needed to come this way and he didn't know how he was going to get it here. I just said why don't I come over and collect it - he was very apologetic and "I don't want to run you around etc" but I said look it's fine - I'll come and collect what you've got and bring it back and deliver it to the relevant places. So off we went and had a straight run through and were there with no bother - had a coffee and a chat and then came home - he was much calmer by the time we left. He's 88 years old, MIL and FIL still haven't been anywhere near, nor has DH's sister - just makes me so cross. You just have to make allowances once people get this old - he's self reliant - still lives in his own bungalow, cooks and does most cleaning for himself, when we arrived he was cleaning the cooker as he'd made himself toad in the hole for lunch, although he does have a cleaning lady once a week, he still has a little car and drives just short distances - around his very local area - possibly no more than 10-12 miles radius - but it does mean he has his independence.

I was naughty when we got back from grandad's - DH said if you're going to run around this afternoon why don't you stop off and buy a chippy tea when you get back - then we won't have to bother cooking later - so that's what we did and was the right thing to do as I'd still got the cheesecake and profiteroles to make as I didn't have time earlier in the day due to staying longer at friends then going out unexpectedly to grandad's - got the cheesecake finished and profiteroles made - didn't think they were going to work out as have to double the recipe - and then wasn't the consistency it should have been so wondered if I'd not doubled it correctly - so just chucked in some extra flour and it did seem to be better - have cooked them and they seem ok - wasn't going to chuck it away and start again - will whip the cream and get that put in and then cover with chocolate sauce - it'll hide a mulitude of sins and I'm sure it'll taste ok!

DH and I have just chatted and decided that as we're going to mum and dad's for lunch today - we will take all the prezzies for their house, and deliver anything else that needs to be delivered elsewhere - so we won't be left with that to do on Xmas Eve as DH has to work and doesn't know what time he will finish - it is usually a half day but you can never tell!

Sorry for my epic post - but so much to say!

    Have peaceful Sunday's everyone x

    Keep safe and well x

  • Good morning everyone :)

Feel rather awful so will dose myself up with some Lemsip, honey and extra lemon and get on with the jobs that still need doing.

I have never been so unprepared for Christmas as I am this year, next year will be so different :o

tru - that wreath is beautiful, was it from a pattern or did you just
    make it up?

Well wishes for all sick people and pets and hugs for those that need or just want them. Keep well, warm and safe and have a super day :)
