New install XP, updates problem.

I've installed XP plenty of times, but have never had this problem to this extent.
HP nc6000 base model laptop, 1.7GHz with 1.5 GB ram, reinstalled XP Pro SP3 and all the correct drivers.
Have always used 'Inform me but don't download/install' for updates.
This time I've used both this and 'Automatic' updates.
It will not update, cpu @100%, fan flat out for hours on end, with the green 'worm' running.
So far,
1. Downloaded and installed the latest update installer, Win UpdateAgent30-x86.
2. Re-registered the Windows update files.
3. Replaced the Windows Update SoftwareDistribution folder.
4. Installed IE 8 with updates, then back to Microsoft update, then with kb2879017
5. Added kb.942288-v3
6.Tried the MS Fixit.
After each 'fix' I've left it running for around 2 hours. Yes, this laptop's been running since around 9.00am.
The last XP install I did was difficult to get updates t star but nothing like this.

Install the latest cumulative update for IE 8, KB2898785, reboot and updates should be fine, it's a known problem.

...but be warned, ms are still working on a "fix" for the latest round of XP updates c0ck-up, so you may be unlucky and it won't fix it...they're "working on it over the holiday period" apparently...........Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

I've been chasing 'known problems' most of the day.
Installed from your link, rebooted.
It's been running for 30 mins and still at 100% and no sign of updates.
Need to get to pub.;)
I've messed about too much with this today, I like everything to be perfect when I hand it back.
Tomorrow I'll reinstall from scratch again, add IE 8 and your kb and see what happens.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

How do GJ, :hello:
I think it's a conspiracy.
The last install I did of XP took ages to connect onto updates, via Microsoft updates.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Do tell.
Not mine, someone bought it from Gumtree, tried to speed it up, downloaded all sorts of carp Ended up with 47 processes running, and 20 mins to boot.
He just want something basic to run some automotive diagnostic software.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
known for a flexing motherboard/loose connection problem - symptoms switch on, fan whirrs continously, blue light on, nothing on screen ,,,,, or nothing at all, unless pressure is applied to the keyboard!!

I used a registry fix from here http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/windows-update-died-tried-many-solutions-still/7d5ec39f-086f-471f-a713-b195d4c4b24d made by someone with the user name TheWraith517. It worked for me.0

Thanks a million.
That's sorted it.
Re-installed XP Pro SP3.
Set updates to 'Inform, don't download or install"
Installed all drivers from HP.
Downloaded and installed IE8 from Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/internet-explorer-8-details.aspx?nosuggest=1
Downloaded and installed http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=41404
Familiar yellow shield appeared almost immediately.
126 updates, plus a few optional .net downloads and all is well in spud towers.
Just got to decide whether to risk Avast, my preference, or MSE for install and forget, with no danger of Chrome and Google toolbar, and unwanted updaters.
Could set up restricted account, but problem when other party wants to install e.g new printer.
Do you give them password or do a 15 miles round trip?
Or Teamviewer?

Thanks for this, that could be almost any laptop.:)
Already seen there could be problems with charging circuit.
This one was £15 spares/repair, he bought new charger and keyboard. Previous owner already fitted new battery, dated late 2012.

That appears to be someone whose updates have stopped, my problem was getting them to even start after a new install.Move along, nothing to see.0
