What a load of tosh that frog tape is

Have any of you actually used this stuff when decorating?

We picked some up when buying in bits & pieces as it claimed to do the job better than the rest of masking tapes. Thought we'd give it a go.

Since the box room is just about the only room we can get to work on at the moment i thought i'd get cracking with painting the walls & started with the feature wall.

Put that tape on & it's bloody awful. Kept peeling off, not very sticky. Then as i'm painting i notice the bottom end just flapping away so have to try & stick it to the wall again.

Not good. Hope the painting doesn't end up looking horrendous now.

Anyone here rate the stuff? I was using it on textured wallpaper if that makes any difference?

Ive used it and yes its very low tack but it does seem to work.

Note that it only works for emulsion not oil based gloss which isn't made very clear.

I used it with gloss to use up the last of the roll and as long as I took it off whilst the gloss was still tacky then it worked ok.

Not a great improvement on normal low tack tape tbh.
  • I guess the proof will be in the pudding then.

    This is the paint i've used today: http://www.crownpaint.co.uk/en/colours/colour-details?colourDetail={454E0CE0-D9AF-4EF8-9E5B-80D9B2C403FB}

Maybe there'll be no bleed & i'll be happy in the end. As for getting it to stick on the walls though, after a bit (bit=lot) of swearing, it eventually stayed put. It didn't impress me though, certainly not for the price.

I did wonder if the textured paper maybe didn't help, but didn't think it would cause as much aggro as it did.

No I did have to keep pressing it back against normal paintwork, especially in vertical stretches of more than a metre.
  • No probs here with frog tape, in fact DH now swears by it......having been recommended by me ;) Could your surface be dusty/greasy? Although using it on a textured paper sounds like a recipe for disaster imho :o

  • It may just be me then. The Mrs used it in the hall/stairs & it seems to have stuck quite well. The paper there is also textured, just not as much as the paper in the box room is that's all.
Unfortunately the boss has gone away for a week so i'm free to mess things up on my own :D

The surfaces I applied it to were all cleaned down with sugar soap and fully dry.

Just found it to be expensive for what is essentially a low tack masking tape (that doesn't work with gloss).
  • lol sod that for a carry on. I had things to do. No sugar soap here just get the stuff put on!! (Well, attempt to)

Buy an angled cutting-in brush, and do away with masking tape.

A little bit of practice and you're away!

Forget frogging tape or similar, use masking tape either low or high tack, whatever your need, or, as above, learn to paint as the pro's or skilled diyers do.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • I've been watching quite a few DIY videos on YouTube since we bought the house.

School can teach you a lot, but in the real world Pythagoras isn't quite as helpful as wiring a plug, wallpapering etc etc. Believe it or not (not i assume :D) i actually came out as an As, Bs & Cs student. I'm just crap at anything practical...

Anyway back on topic...i watched a video on cutting in & painting. I've no idea how they do that. They whizz the brush around at lightning speed & don't get any of it on the ceiling etc.

I tried doing it & was going much slower & yep - splodge. Thankfully it was on a section that wont be seen.

& that textured wallpaper is a horror to paint. Keeps leaving mini dimples that are a nuisance to paint.

Oh & i went to the house today to see what it looked like totally dried out. Patchy for one, but on topic ... the frog tape had lifted. All over.

For the next 3 walls i'll probably have a bash without it. See how i get on. It's only going to be a PC/storage room anyway.
