I have a 4x4, but I have got a farm so mine is a genuine work horse, Its and old Terrano Panel Van on all Terrain tyres, Not a big glamorous Chelsea tractor.
I have to agree with the OP though, If I dint need to bounce across fields there is no way on this planet I would have one.
They are defiantly the latest accessory to the school run, and why anyone who didn't want to haul weight around has a Pickup, that actually hasn't got any Pickup space is beyond me.
The other thing that makes me and me pals laugh is "off Roaders" diffidently a breed, accountants and bank mangers through the week, but at weekends they take out a large penis mobile with lights along the top and a snorkel which they then use to ruin green lanes.
And for those who fall for the marketing that new diesels are more efficient its rubbish, Due to the emissions standards they essentially need to run more diesel for a given torque to keep the crown temperatures down(as there feeding hot gas back through the engine)....0 -

point taken the mini is far from being a mini sized car, it hasn't been a mini in the correct sense of the word in years - it's HUGE!
Have you not noticed that while a lot of cars get bigger, smaller models get introduced at the bottom of the range.
Think BMW with the 1 series, Audi with the A3 and Ford with the KA.
Over time manufacturers seem to push their cars upmarket in terms of price, trim levels and size, taking loyal customers with them - then they introduce a "new city car" at the bottom of the range and it all starts again.
For example a Golf these days is considerably larger than a mk1 golf but the Polo is fairly similar in size to the original golf.0 -

You clearly havent driven say, an x5 then?
Think luxury car with excellent driving position and you're close. Certainly not utilitarian in any way.

If thats what some people want to do then why not? I really dont get this who judging other peoples lives and decisions against your life. Everyones different.0 -
Can somone explain how any car is rude? And antisocial? Surely thats sports cars etc not 5/7 seat vehicles. And no fiesta is touching a range rover SC. In fact not that many cars do full stop for 0-60. Bit of a rant that seems outta place, after all Mse is about saving money, cant think of anything cheaper to run a repair than a defender on veggie. Fix and fuel it your self.Has the op had a recent shunt and lost?0

Actually you really need to do your homework more on 4x4s. Generally the latest variants tend to be no larger but certainly lighter than their predecessors, and they're invariably more economical.
Also Warrior and Animal were from memory names used by Mitsubishi to help sell what were and are fairly average vehicles - they're certainly not "brands"
Animal is a brand;)0 -

If it looks and drives like a car, why not go for the cheeper option and buy a car?If thats what some people want to do then why not? I really dont get this who judging other peoples lives and decisions against your life. Everyones different.
Like fox hunting then?0 -
Its people like the Op that make me want to go and buy a 4x4
I miss my old 4x4 forester and wonder if a vag v10 would fit into a defender that could be fun in the snow.0 -

Because peoples choices are their own to make?
I dont see the problem here.
If someone wants to drive a 4x4 then why not? It takes up a smaller footprint on the road than say a 7 series or S Class Merc, so if thats what someone wants to do then fine.0 -
Who needs snow? My FWD car was scrabbling today on the slippy surfaces typical at this time of year. Get in a Subaru and the planted feeling is like nothing you will ever experience.
Give it gas and it goes, no drama, no wheelspin, no scrabbling. Its a shame the petrols are still so thirsty as I would have one tomorrow.0
