Haggling with Virgin

Options
Just had my first ever attempt at haggling ! I currently pay £42 per month for landline, broadband and basic tv package. It was going up to £45 in February 2014.

I have just phoned cancellations at Virgin Media and I have now got 6 months at £31.99 going up to £36.99 after 6 months ! Very pleased ! Oh, and I got a Tivo box with free installation thrown in !

    And a new minimum term?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Isn't it 18 months on TIVO with 6 months discount?

How easy was it? I have been with Virgin since NTL days. I have never tried to threaten cancellation as I have always thought that I wouldn't sound convincing enough! I don't actually want to cancel as I don't want the hassle to changing to another provider and think that they are all as bad as each other.

    Hi Katejo,
I wasn't difficult, as I said I'm new to haggling and wasn't very confident. I chose the option for cancellations on the phone and said that I wanted to leave because I didn't feel I was getting a good deal. I'm out of contract with virgin anyway so that wasn't an issue.

I said that I was reviewing my outgoings and some of my friends had much better deals and I'd seen some other providers offers. He immediately asked if I would be interested in a better deal and offered the above.

I'm happy with the deal, I like virgin and they have always resolved any issues promptly to my satisfaction. Maybe I could have got more if I'd haggled more but I'm happy with it and I think I got a good result.

To those who are pointing out the downside I believe the deal is good, I didn't really want to leave and I'm paying significantly less than I would have if I hadn't called.

On other threads people are complaining about the imposition of a new minimum term when taking a retention or broadband speed deal. As long as you are aware of the new terms, then well done on your money-saving.:T

I have just got back from staying at my Dad's over Christmas. He had upgraded from a V+ box to Tivo since my last last visit and was pretty happy with it. I had been put off TIVO by seeing a lot of complaints on the forums but I am now thinking of choosing their cancellations option and seeing what I can get. I don't mind being tied in for a short while as I am not planning to move house in the near future.
