Use Ebay to upgrade phone?

Hello
I would like to upgrade my iPhone 4 to an iPhone 5, but I'm finding that any change, even if I stick with my current network (O2), will mean the cost of my contact increases.
I currently have a great historical deal which gives me unlimited texts, 600 mins of calls (enough for me) and 1000MB of data for £25. I don't want to lose this.
Can I simply buy an O2 iPhone 5 on Ebay and sell my O2 iPhone 4 on Ebay? Will I simply be able to switch over the SIMs, and keep my phone number? Will it be a seamless process (i.e. will all the data transfer over via iTunes backups)?
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks
John

2000m+Unltd+Unltd cost £20 on Giffgaff. The same O2 signal and no contract. 500+Unltd+Unltd cost £15.talljohnlondon wrote: »I currently have a great historical deal which gives me unlimited texts, 600 mins of calls (enough for me) and 1000MB of data for £25. I don't want to lose this.
'Three' give you 600+5000+1Gb for £12.90
Ovivo do 600+1000+1000 for £10 or 1500+2000+2000 for £20.
Etc.
Yes. Or you can buy unlocked iP 5 that works on any network. Can I simply buy an O2 iPhone 5 on Ebay and sell my O2 iPhone 4 on Ebay?
iP 4 takes micro-sim.Will I simply be able to switch over the SIMs, and keep my phone number?
iP 5 takes nano-sim.
You'll need either to cut your sim or ask O2 for a replacement.
I guess so.Will it be a seamless process (i.e. will all the data transfer over via iTunes backups)?
Buying expensive phones on ebay has known pitfalls. It's not uncommon when a phone gets reported lost/stolen later for insurance purposes and gets blocked. Selling requires some caution either.Any thoughts appreciated.0 -
The same can be said of Gumtree or any multitude of non-re rail vendors, even Cash Converters. The bulk of sales are problem free - and a non contract handset is certainly the way to go - if the old SIM is of the wrong size, a SIM swap to the most appropriate SIM is often provided at no cost, and your existing contract rolls on.
Do remember when selling to confirm your handset is locked, and buying, you need one unlocked or locked to your existing network.0 -

You can buy any phone and put your sim card in - O2 don't care what phone you use, as long as they are getting your money.
Like Grumbler said the iPhone 5 takes a nano-sim - go to any O2 store and ask for a sim-swap - it is a free service and moves your number and contract over. Don't cut the sim.
Definitely advisable to back-up your data on the iTunes - when you do get your new phone and plug it into iTunes it will ask if you want to set it up as a new iPhone or restore from back up. Restore from back up and it will move everything over.
Alternatively look at O2 Refresh - it breaks down the cost of the phone and the cost of the tariff - it may be cheaper.
