Whereas this quote is made up of a quote tag with your username -
[ QUOTE=Cardew;64135542] - again, without the space, your text (Sorry not understood.), and a closing quote tag - [ /QUOTE] - without the space.
The tags are visible in the edit window when you type a new reply or press the blue quote button to generate an edit window with the quoted text already included.
It works OK using Firefox,(see below) so the problem must be IE 11Whereas this quote is made up of a quote tag with your username0 -
It works OK using Firefox,
We know that.
It is IE11 that is causing the problem.
Also it is not just MSE forums although they are the worst.Getting forgetful, if you think I've asked this before I probably have. :rotfl:0 -
Ever since I joined MSE some years ago, if I wanted to quote from another post, or another document, I copied and pasted the extract into my post.Ah, the quote button on the toolbar, not the Quote button below a previous post...
Why does anyone have to copy and paste the details into the "quote"? Pressing the "quote" button brings up the whole post being replied to. In addition clicking the Multi-quote button means more than one post can be replied to at the same time (as I've done above).NowRetired wrote: »Also it is not just MSE forums although they are the worst.
In addition, it's even possible to quote from other threads;
Click on the arrow after "Cardew" in that quote and the forum takes you to the thread and post it is from. See? No need to quote manually at all!Welcome to the forum.0 -

I don't want to quote the whole post, just an extract like:
Why does anyone have to copy and paste the details into the "quote"?
I also may want to quote an extract from 'War and Peace'!
Incidentally none of the icons work either;), unless you copy and paste.0 -
I don't want to quote the whole post, just an extract
Press the blue quote button on the post you want to extract the quote from, it places the whole post in the edit window with opening and closing quote tags. Edit the text between the tags, but don't alter the tags themselves.
See posts #10 and 110 -
There is a problem with the WYSIWYG editor with IE11.
IE11 removed the "selection" object, as discussed here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ie/ms535869%28v=vs.85%29.aspx .
In the vbulletin_textedit.js file it does this:var range=this.editdoc.selection.createRange()
It must be changed tovar range=this.editdoc.getSelection().createRange()
Unfortunately only MSE or VBulletin can effect this.
What you can do though is click the little icon "switch editor mode" on the top right of the editor, it's the icon with a little A and a bigger A above the smileys. Once you do this the quote button, and others, will work once again.0 -

That's fine if you want to quote something from the current thread, however:Cardew wrote:However any extract from MSE, or any other source, that I wish to quote doesn't appear as a quote. e.g. the quote below from another thread was copied and pasted, selected and the 'quote button clicked and nothing happened.0
