Cannot use the quote function on MSE forums

I wonder is anyone has any ideas on this problem.
If I post a reply to a post in a thread, that post appears correctly as a quote.
However any extract from MSE, or any other source, that I wish to quote doesn't appear as a quote. e.g. the quote below from another thread was copied and pasted, selected and the 'quote button clicked and nothing happened.
Hoping someone here can point me in the right direction. I'd like to buy a small DAB radio for the kitchen, seen some nice Roberts ones that get very good reviews for about £50 or so. So far, so good, that's about my budget.

Use the following;
quote=Cardew]qkvjqenjvenjvn [/quote
You need to put a square bracket front and back.0 -
Does CODE work for you as a work-around?
Both CODE and QUOTE are working ok for me:i like cheese

Paste the text from elsewhere, then do something to highlight it - put it in quotes, change it to italic, make it a different colour.
The quote function isn't designed to quote arbitrary text that's on your clipboard, it's designed to take one post in the thread, and quote it in another.

Not sure I understand your post. Ever since I joined MSE some years ago, if I wanted to quote from another post, or another document, I copied and pasted the extract into my post.
I then 'highlighted' that text and clicked the quote button

and the text appeared in a quote box.
For example I have copied and pasted a few words from your post above(see below), highlighted them and clicked the 'quote button and nothing happens.
If that doesn't work, what function is the quote button used for?
I would have expected the extract from your post to appear as shown in post #3

Sorry not understood.
How do I get it to appear like the first version of post #3
That poster has shown you quote tags with an instruction - add the square brackets that he removed, to the beginning of the opening quote tag, and to the end of the closing one.
Surely you've seen these tags in the edit window when you quote another post?0 -
This is a quote test
Ah, the quote button on the toolbar, not the Quote button below a previous post... This was done with the quote button pictured in your post, the quote in previous post used the blue quote button below the existing posts.
Which web browser are you using? Have you changed your browser since you first started using the forum?0 -
IE11 and Windows 8 or 8.1?

Quoted Text
Consists of the opening quote tag - [ QUOTE] without the space before the Q, the text - Quoted Text - and the closing quote tag -
[ /QUOTE] - again, without the space before the /0 -
Sorry not understood.
Whereas this quote is made up of a quote tag with your username -
[ QUOTE=Cardew;64135542] - again, without the space, your text (Sorry not understood.), and a closing quote tag - [ /QUOTE] - without the space.
The tags are visible in the edit window when you type a new reply or press the blue quote button to generate an edit window with the quoted text already included.0
