Second hand electric cooker connected but no power......

I posted not so long ago about how easy it would be to hard wire a stand alone electric cooker id bought second hand.

Now my husband is competent at basic electrics and took his time over it and all went perfectly, turned the electrics back on and switched the cooker switch and nothing, just seems like no power is getting to it what so ever.

The person i bought it off assured me it was fully working, even to the point were they asked if i could wait a week for delivery as they had to use it until their new one turned up.

I have sent a text to the person 20 mins ago as i still have their number but as yet ive heard nothing.

Have i been had here or is there something we havent done? I really am panicking as its 4 day before Christmas and we will be eating beans on toast and not much else if it is broken.
Also dont really have the money to pay an electrician to check it for them to just say the cooker is broken...............

HELP!

Is there a single socket in the same plate as the cooker wall switch? Does the socket work?

Is there a grill as well as oven? Does grill work?
Could be the timer if it has one.

Pictures of wiring and everything would help.

is there an electronic clock on the cooker? Sometimes this needs to be set for the oven the work. If it's flashing no's then you know at least that power is getting though

Since it presumably has at least one oven and four rings on the hob, plus a grill, it's likely that no power is getting to it if nothing at all works. Did you not see it working before you bought it?
Surely if your husband is competent to hard wire a cooker to a cooker connection unit, then he is able to do a continuity test on the cooker, and test that there is power available at the connection unit? If not, then he shouldn't be doing it.
Have you checked at the CU to see if the cooker circuit has tripped out (assuming that you have MCB's)?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
  • I will post some pictures in a minute.

    Thanks!

Dont know if these links will work or not because the options on this site dont work properly but this is the cooker and the connections it has, also the wall socket and the electrics. The socket has been tested and works fine.

No we didnt see it working before we bought it but it was £25 and we had hardly any money and desperate. Also we were told they needed to use it for a further week until their new one arrived.

My husband can fit plug sockets light switches and light fittings through his own knowledge, he is not qualified in any way. But to be fair wiring this cooker was as easy as all of the above.
I dont know what you are supposed to do if you cant afford expensive electrician fees? starve?

Nothing has tripped when the electric is switched back on at all.

Just because something works when you've done the wiring doesn't mean it's safe or to regulations. There's a reason for the electrician being expensive. He has done the studying, has the knowledge and the tools to ensure a safe installation. I assume your husband did basic tests on the circuit and has ensured the cable is rated for the cooker?

If you plug something into the socket next to the main cooker switch http://imgur.com/z5wZY8D does it work?

If its not blowing the dedicated cooker circuit trip switch or rcd then at least rule out live->earth fault, earth leakage or Neutral->earth, of course if there is an earth to neutral and also an live to earth fault then depending on the setup of the installation (TT for example) then the current could flow back via the neutral and the rcd wouldn't trip even though there is fault condition

is there 240v at the cooker connection unit http://imgur.com/cdH3fBU and also 240v at the cooker terminals http://imgur.com/IlmTw9J?

What CSA is the cable that you've used to connect the cooker? Its hard to tell, although it does appear the cores are multistranded.
  • My husband has just looked at the cooker switch and it looks like the plug socket is wired ans does work but the cooker switch doesnt have a wire connected.

I take it this is our problem?

Just going to ring the Housing and ask them to sort it out.
