A few years ago I used to go to the loo with 3 cats and two dogs.

This was fine if it was the bathroom...not so clever when it was in the little loo. 2 cats on to of cistern, GSH in front of me, small dog on knee, other cat (who actually belonged nextdoor) in middle of GSD legs.

    So yep....totally normal.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • Yup, LS follows me everywhere. Unless he has managed to get up on the sofa, in which case a bomb wouldn't shift him!

He follows me to the toilet, although now seems happy to just watch rather than try and get involved!

I do now when I am going up and down stairs, because I know he will follow me, make him go first. Had too many near misses where he has charged up behind me and pushed past me etc. I now don't move on the stairs until he has gone up or down before me so I can see where he is.

My male dog does this. He's not a rescue but sticks to me like glue. He can be fast asleep and the second I make a move to stand up his eyes snap open and his nose is rammed into the back of my leg.

I love him to bits and it's quite sweet really but if I'm making a cuppa or whatever and take a step backwards without thinking, I've stood on his paws and feel really guilty!

Our was a !!!!!! for this when we first got him. Some days he's terrible, some he's good. We used to constantly trip over him in the kitchen but have managed to train him so that when we go in the kitchen, he knows to go and sit on the sofa which faces into the kitchen from the living room, so he can still see us but we're not tripping over him.

He's also now staying in his bed if we go for a shower or bath most times, although there are still plenty of occasions when I come out and he's sat 'guarding' it.

I find it quite endearing, that is when I'm not faceplanting the ground because he's hanging around my ankles.

Gitdog is the same - I don't generally mind but it drives me up the wall when I'm hungover.
After the incident when I was on the loo and he was trying to ram his head down the bowl to see what was going on, he's now banished to the other side of the baby gate when I go upstairs. (Which I do sometimes to get away from him when he's being particularly annoying)
In the kitchen there's a step he sits on which is out if the way and which gets him the occasional treat. Shame he doesn't pick up the other training quite as fast....
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

No idea about dogs but I have two cats who think they are glued to me whenever I'm home.

My dog does it as well, she is closer to my front leg than my back leg is when walking, not a rescue and I have had her for over 15 years.
She is fine when I go out as long as she has a couple of biscuits as I leave, then she just goes back to bed.
Treat other's how you like to be treated.

    Harry born 23/09/2008

And now I have the joy of having my foster granddaughter becoming my real granddaughter. Can't ask for anything better

    UPDATE,
As of today 180919. my granddaughter is now my official granddaughter, adoption finally granted
  • Same here with one of our two. Follows me EVERYWHERE. The problem is that he suffers from separation anxiety, so I try to also have some "alone time" - just have times where I go to the kitchen and keep the door closed between us.

Also from watching the thing on dogs at home alone a while back on TV, the fact that a dog doesn't bark or whine when you are not there doesn't mean they don't suffer from separation anxiety. They might still get very stressed when alone.

Try your best to break the habit if possible...it won't get easier to do as the dog gets older!
  • I have two cats who are also the same, Gizmo is worse than Salem for following you though and if you manage to sneak out of a room without him noticing as soon as he realises you’ve gone he starts calling running room to room until you answer or he finds you.

They've now learnt that if Salem hangs on the handle and pulls it down Gizmo can push the door open (team work at its best), this works on a couple of doors including the bathroom door as the others you have to give quite a shove to open. This has lead to a couple of almost embarrassing moments as there is a window at the top of the stairs which has full view of the bathroom when the door is open, luckily no one was walking past at the time and I now lock the door if they don’t follow me inside.

They haven’t quite learnt which doors it will work on and which it won’t yet so all you hear every now and then is a bang as Gizmo tries to push a door open. Thank goodness they haven’t learnt the principal of pulling doors open yet.

My cat does this. If I manage to get into the bathroom without him seeing me it's about 10 seconds before this little paw creeps around the bottom of the door and he pushes his way in.

I was up and down the stairs about 15 times in half an hour yesterday (was wrapping presents and kept forgetting things) and he followed me the whole time.
