Hi all,

Does anyone know how much it would cost to remove a couple of large trees from the garden? Including roots.

We are talking about a very established conifer and an established conker tree. Both are taller than the house. I'd estimate them to be over 20 years old.

Many thanks.

Have you got any quotes from tree surgeon/gardener?

This year I got one large conifer removed and it cost me £110 (£55 to cut the tree + £55 to remove the garbage).
Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.

Probably £100-200 per tree and maybe a little extra if you want the roots ground.

I would suggest you don't get the roots ground out at first though - kill them properly with stump killer before you do that. We had a tree taken down and stump removed all in one day and we are still cutting back saplings that are growing from the remnants of the root system.

I had an extremely large elm tree removed a couple of years ago, neede climbing and limbs cutting off and then gradually taken down, probably 80-100ft tall. It cost £750!!!
  • Maybe someone would be glad of the wood and you wouldn't then have to pay for disposal.

Perhaps an advert on Freecycle to check?
  • When we lived at our last house (in North Essex) our neighbour wanted us to remove a large (35-40') cypress tree that abutted his front driveway. We were only prepared for him to remove the branches that overhung his property, but I remember he obtained a quote for full removal and that was £340 in 2008.

you need to check whether they have a TPO or whether you live in a conservation area before doing anything with large trees.

Very hard to get an estimate on here, you will need to get a couple of quotes from local tree surgeons. Costs will depend on size, shape, access, nearby structures etc. Could be anything from a few hundred to thousands.

Do you need proper qualified tree surgeons - the sort that use ropes and rigging to climb the trees and cut them down piece by piece?

If so, in my experience, a team of 2 tree surgeons tend to charge about £400 to £600 per day.

Or, if you just need a gardener to stand on the ground and cut through the trunk, I guess that's about £15 per hour (or whatever the local rate is).

(Tree surgeons sell the wood and chippings they cut down, so I doubt they would give a discount for not taking them away.)
