I presume you are in England? Children born in September can start the August before their 5th birthday (in fact children born up to some time around then end of Jan/beg Feb can start that Aug too, making them 4.5 yrs- sorry don't know exact date, also you can defer to start the next year if birthday Jan or Feb, and can ask if Nov/Dec too-making them 5.5 yrs). Currently most children here start nursery at latest intake after 3rd birthday and pre-school the next year (of course the deferred ones do longer here).

September is the best time to be born, I dont know what youre complaining about. The cut off has been August 31st for donkeys years you make it sound like your council has just implemented it!

Lots of people try to plan to have September born babies. August is much more of a disadvantage.

Never heard anyone complain about this before!

She wont be joining a year later, she'll be joining at the normal time, its the poor summer babies who often end up going before they are ready.

exactly - if this is your oldest child OP its not surprising that you didn't know the date of birth cut-off, but claire is right, its been the same cut-off all over England for years and years (it was the same when my daughter started school 9 years ago).

thanks :) - I didn't go to school in England so I have no idea how long the cut-off has been the same date.

My daughter was born in late September. My local council cuts off school intake by 31st August.

This means, she will have to join school almost a year later (and extra childcare cost)

Do I have any choice here?

Can I try to push her to school next year? Will schools consider my application if there is space remaining?

A September birthday is usually thought of as more beneficial (to the child at least) than an August one. Personally I'd be happy for my child to go when they're as old as possible, it can be a real struggle for teeny weeny ones at first.

I don't really get why you'd think that people could just choose the school year they fancy their child going into. Or is this just children born in September? In which case wouldn't they have moved the cut-off date to the 1st October? :D

I think you're being a bit generous there! General knowledge innit, plus it will have been the same when the OP went to school. Plus the OP does know the cut-off date, it just doesn't suit her :D

  • Is it fair that a child who is 11 months younger than your OP's child will have the same expectations of achievement of them ?

It's "always been like that". For decades. That's how it was when I went to school in the 60s, so why're you getting so mad now, as if it's personal, just you, just that school, or new?

But then what about the poor November children who want to go early? Why wont someone please think of the children?
