  • Fingers crossed Steph...definitely seems like the sensible option. My husband used to get terrible bank charges and it is so demotivating...eventually we paid the overdraft back and closed the account...when it was gone the relief was great. That was five years ago and we have never had an overdraft since. Change is possible you just have to believe in yourself...you can do it!!!!

Hi when i applied for Santander i asked for an overdraft of the same 2950 they then wanted me to sign a letter as barclays so they had permission to switch my details as barclays wouldnt release the info.
I just transferred DD s myself and got my wages paid into new account just left DLA payment into barclays. I was lucky enough to get PPI so that cleared OD but that was 2 month after swap.
If you are successful with opening account I would just send them a copy of your financial statement and set up a payment arrangement and ask them to freeze interest.
Good Luck hope you are accepted as I am sure it will make the world of difference.

  • Hi Steph! I hope you're accepted too that would be mega news and deffo a step forward in managing the debt :T. I used to live in my OD every month and bank charges were dreadful :( but we've been without an OD now since 2011 (when we started on this journey) and I will never get another one again! I really hope you're accepted. If it is a no, don't be disheartened, try again in a few months time as you've recently been credit checked haven't you for a loan (or did it not go that far?) which may go against you.

    :)

Hi Wantabetterlife, yes I actually think that I will be more motivated to budget seriously and not make any misc spending when I am actually working with money and not a massive minus figure. It will also be a lot easier to see what money is spare for debt repayment. Fingers crossed. x

Hi Shinner, Good idea with contacting B#rclays and asking them to freeze the interet. If I can get that far, I will do that xx

I don't think the loan application got as far as a credit check, but I might be wrong. I have been really reticent to change banks in the past, but now it feels like the most sensible option. Bet I won't be able to get one now.
I guess I could just apply for a BASIC account, that would be fine as long as I can access it online and have a debit card.

    Thanks for your help xxx

Hi if they do decline which I don't think they will as your mortgage with them. You could always ask Barclays if you could open a basic account and freeze charges on other account and set repayment up? Not ideal but could be helpful also may help with financial hardship claim.xx

  • Ahh I wasn't sure if it had got that far, if not then you should be fine :) I've got a basic account with hsbc and have online banking and several online saver accounts with them that I can access online. I've a cheque book & visa debit with the account so not much different to my all singing and dancing b@rclays one that I used to have (aside from the £4.5k overdraft ;) )

  • Yippeeeeee.....S#ntander have accepted our application. Got to send them two proof of I.D for us both, they are also starting the switching service straight away (eeeek).

Sooo excited. I really feel like this will be the REAL start of my debt busting. Will be so nice to bank without looking at -£3000 all the time :(.

I tried to get hold of the Council today about the council tax summons, but got a continuous engaged tone. I once got through to the main switchboard and apparently they are overloaded with calls. Must be lots of other poor folk calling about Court summons.

I have to say I gave up and just paid it. I doubted very much that I would get it taken off as its probably court costs that has already spent. Just glad to be able to rip up the summons and it be gone.

Going to be a confusing few weeks as this switch over takes place, but I am VERY optimistic that this will really mentally help me keep control.

Hope you have all had a successful MSE day xxx
