Buyer wants to return or will leave negative feedback

I am a private seller and have received a message through Ebay from a buyer who bought some brand new shapewear from me, saying that she has used this brand of shapewear for years but these 'don't hold her in' as well as her other ones do!

I don't offer refunds (because I sell mostly underwear) but she's asking me to 'reconsider and accept a return' because she 'doesn't want to leave a negative feedback'

Can someone leave you a neg because they just don't like the item? I have 100% feedback and don't know what to do :(

This "mostly underwear" you sell... Is it "mostly new" as if it is I can see how your buyer may be confusing your "private seller" status.

Of course returns are a day to day concern of a business.

I am sure you could always report the feedback extortion to ebay and handle it that way?

I tend to agree with Raggie, since eBay do not allow the sale of used um, knickers I assume you sell new. You mention selling 'mostly' underwear which assumes more than one lot- and that's beginning to sound awfully like a business.

As a business you are obliged to take returns, which I think is very unfortunate in the case of underwear .

  • "There are some goods you can't return if you simply change your mind, including:

    underwear and earrings"

So even someone in the business of selling underpants has no need to accept returns.

If you say no, all she needs to do is raise a SNAD claim and you'll have to refund.

Yes. Feedback reflects the buyer's experience of a transaction, so they can leave a negative for any reason that they want (provided that they obey some basic rules about what wording they use in the comment).

  • I don't sell that much on Ebay, just have spates of selling when I've gathered up enough stuff, but recently I aquired quite a lot of this underwear at a bargain price in a sale so after distributing it between myself, family and friends I put what was left on Ebay.

I have just done livechat and they said this:

Nothing to worry, in the event that your buyer leave a negative feedback you can contact us back and we will review the feedback for you.

For the meantime, I suggest that you respond to your buyer's message to explain your side about the item.

Do you think this means I'm ok to refuse a return and they will remove any negative feedback?

Hopefully they will protect you from poor feedback. However, you are a business, a business buys things cheaply and sells them on ( and yes we often keep some of our stock ). I would be careful therefore to stay under the eBay radar as they will require that you upgrade to a business account.

Yu are also of course supposed to declare yourself to HMRC ,hopefully before anyone else does.

  • Oh dear, I never realised this -I thought a business seller was someone who sold in large volumes! Think I'll just refund the woman and stick to selling my own second-hand stuff and unwanted items from now on.

If I refund her and cancel the transaction will she no longer be able to leave feedback?

This will be for cleanliness concerns.

OP does not need to accept this return, unless stated they will.

A seller cannot cancel a transaction without the agreement of the buyer. You can either refuse the return, and hope eBay protect your feedback, or accept the return, get the buyer to send the item back tracked at their own cost and refund.

  • I am sorry to say that just because they say they will review your feedback doesn't mean that they will remove it. I have had this line from them before and then received negative feedback and they didn't remove it. It needs to fall within their guidelines:

    http://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/policies/feedback-removal.html

Here they are in full if you fancy a read.
