Current 2 horse trailers run from 2600kg -> 3500kg gross weight, which is getting pretty heavy. Definitely full sized 4x4.

Another option though, if you don't actually need a 4 wheel drive, is getting something like a transit van; they should tow that size of trailer without issue.

Nope and nope again. The TDI 300 is a reliable engine but lacks grunt. I have a 1.4 tonne caravan and my Disco 1 struggles up hills with it. I've had a few Discos and they are all the same. Pulling over 2 tonnes of horses would reduce it to a crawl even on moderate hills.

It's a common problem with older turboo diesels. Newer ones are a lot better.

Servce it. All the 300s ive had pull like a train, the 200s werent bad either.

No, transits dont pull much and you'd be surprised how little weight they take in the back too.

Don't much fancy tugging 2-anna-bit ton on wet grass in a van, though.

Lol, if it only it were that simple and I regularly service it anyway. It's low mileage and does pull very well, just not up hills. They are well known for their lack of grunt. The LRO forum has a section on how to turn the boost up on the turbo to overcome the problem, but it's very difficult on the 300tdi, plus there's the downside of lowering mpg. Bigger intercoolers, better pipes etc are all ways to go, but in its bog standard form, it suffers. Even without a tow, it'll still slow down from 70mph on the hills on the A303 and as I've had half a dozen of them, I know they're all the same. My current one, which is very low mileage, accelerates well and pulls teh caravan quite happily - just slows down on the hills.

It's not the only vehicle that used to suffer - I drove many BMW 520's that would run out of steam going up hills, until BMW fitted bigger and more efficient turbos.

    I think you mean "wouldn't":)

I've done the boost increase on old Disco with a 200 TDI and it did make a difference, much more responsive and more torque, but fuel consumption dropped by about 5mpg.

But I'm in the market for a Disco 3 at the moment, so towing woes should be a thing of the past soon :D

My bad, I was under the impression most were 3500kg load and 3500kg trailer, but all a quick google has shown me is that some are 3500kg train, which is pretty poor.
