I don't agree with this. While I'm sure that some people will think "thats a rip-off... you chged me for something thats free"; that *is* somewhat of a small-minded view of things.
You don't have to agree with it, it's my personal opinion. Just because the cause is good doesn't mean you have to agree with the way that people are raising money. If I buy something at a school fair, I expect it to be something donated that is either unwanted or a generous gift, but I don't expect to find that item free somewhere and I would buy it because it's useful for myself or kids. I would prefer to just hand over cash!
I'm sure there are an awful lot of people who don't know what open-source free software is. Surely you are paying a small sum (which is going to the school!!) for the knowledge of how good this is... and to get a copy of it all this useful software nicely packaged on a CD; so you can keep it and not have to find and download large files yourself? I'd pay for that!
I don't disagree with educating people who don't know about this software, just the fact of charging for it. Also it is not likely to be that useful unless it is something they really wanted anyway. It could be just extra stuff to clog up their pc. If you would pay for it, that's fine, I'm just pointing out my view on it (and maybe others). If you're going to make people aware that it can be found free, perhaps the CD's wouldn't sell that well and the effort has been wasted, I don't know.

Some parents will go out and pay £100s on getting the extras from Microsoft (so their kids can do that database work or whatever). Yet there is some fantastic software available and people don't know it!
You added this while I was writing my post..

Well perhaps the school, parents and children would be better off if the parents who know and understand what is available tell them that information - free!
