HSBC may have just decided to adopt the U.S. regulations (all transactions over USD$10,000 have to be reported/declared to the government) worldwide. Maybe £6k is worth around USD$10k these days?
It isn't that - they are applying their own AML controls and are not satisfied with the explanation given. £8k in cash for builders with no paperwork probably sounds like tax evasion (not by the OP but by the builders).0
