Christmas Present For A Frugal Person

  • The problem with vouchers is that you can't be sure the person will actually use them, especially if it's for an experience.

I'd rather give a subscription to something.

My mum isn't stingy or particularly frugal but she is difficult to buy for and hates me spending money on her. This year I bought some beautiful yarn, a soft and slightly fluffy silk and angora mix, in off white, and knitted a scarf in a lovely lace pattern, it's very light but very warm. It's not like anything she could buy in the shops and I think she will really love it. It cost me about £8 for the yarn, plus lots of hours.

Maybe a bit late now unless you're a very fast knitter, but perhaps next year something home made?

When my nan died we found a cupboard full of unopened gifts we'd bought her over the years, I wish I had known as I would have given her cash or paid a months rent, done a few food shops for her etc.
I know now that she didn't need or want the stuff we bought her.
Perhaps a few online food shop deliveries of treats she wouldn't buy herself would be better.
I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

Digital room thermometer. It will enable her to turn the heat down and save more money.

It's not ingratitude that makes us put presents away in drawers, but more that there comes a time when we have everything we want. If we'd needed it, we would have bought it.

Now if someone wrote in a card the date and time they were taking me for afternoon tea or lunch, I would absolutely love it.

Thanks all, a voucher for afternoon tea sounds perfect. She will definitely use that.

She already has lots of plants & gardening tools. I wanted to avoid buying her a material gift as she has so much stuff which she doesn't use and doesn't even remember she has! The problem is when you ask her "what do you want", she will reel off a long list but every single time I have done this without fail it has still ended up in a drawer! She has so many expired boxes of teas, coffees, chocolate, biscuits, jams etc in the cupboard which she is "saving for a special occasion".

The voucher with an expiry date forcing her to go out is the only thing I am pretty sure she will definitely use (and enjoy).

She really is one of those impossible people!
Why not take her to lunch at a garden centre? Going together is far nicer for her than a voucher for her and other.
