A 24" monitor could feel a bit small after a while. I got a 27" Philips one from, of all places, BT: (Philips E-line 273E3LHSB 27" LED Monitor). A bit pricey (£180 or thereabouts but they may do a student discount)but, as I expected, what seemed huge now seems just a tad on the small side.

17" feels small after a while, any higher is more then enough, my 23" is big enough...

He might also depending on what the case comes with, want to buy a couple of additional fans for it (some cases come with about 6+ fan mounts, but only 1 or 2 fans by default).

This is a good point; it's worth investing in a couple of good fans to keep things cool. That's one item not to skimp on either; it's always tempting to say a fan is a fan, but as someone who has bought £2 fans and £10 fans, I can tell you the difference in noise level can be enormous, and that really impacts on the quality of the overall experience.

The other thing to be aware of is cables. Motherboard and case manufacturers have got pretty mean in recent years; I don't know what they're bundling in there, but when I did my most recent build over the summer, I actually didn't get any cables with either (and they weren't at the cheap end of things), so he might want to check that he'll have at least a SATA cable or two handy. The PSU will definitely come with power cables, so no need to worry about those.

A -k model Intel processor is made for over-clocking; a retail Intel CPU cooler is not.

The power supply is good but a bit of a luxury model. I've been looking myself and noted that Scan's 3XS systems use a 550W model for overclocked CPU + 1 graphics card (£76.26) rather than the 750W model (£94.50). If noise is not a concern (and using the Intel retail cooler I guess not), then the Corsair CX 600W is cheaper (£55.92).

I still have a thing for 24" 1920x1200 rather than 1900x1080 monitors; the extra space is nice when doing office tasks, but the price is much higher.

I would buy all parts from one place, then one supplier cannot blame another if some part is faulty.

If you have an ok monitor, then I'd delay that purchase and get a SSD now to simplify the work needed in future. Otherwise adding a SSD for performance means moving the operating system around, which could be painful.

An online retailer given a list of desired parts can probably pick out any missed cables etc.

I've had bad experiences with Corsair memory and PSUs in the past, but lots of people rave about them.

And SSDs are now so cheap that I wouldn't even consider a PC without one.

would swap out the memory kits for the Kingston hyper beasts they run much higher than the ones you have @2400MHZ (when enable xmp profile 1 in the mobo bios), I have bought 32GB of corsairs in the past and after 6 months had to have all sticks replaced (not overclocked) because (the report states) manufacture defect with solder connections. people I game online with avoid corsair as they have all experienced failures and you really have to jump through hoops to get a "code" from the website to send them back at your cost (in my case had to be sent to California (£22.25 inc insurance to send via airmail).

the kit above are in the same price range (if not a £1 or two cheaper and give higher frequency), with that in mind the mobo supports 2400mhz as one of its highest peed ratings the memory will ensure that the mobo is running at it fastest memory bandwidth meaning your getting what you want for your money.

I have hyperx memory in my other machine (ddr2) that are almost now 5 years old they have been overclocked most of their lives and still perform great.

agree the 3570K ivy bridge is rather last gen. but if that's what he wants then I would recommend getting a 1155 socket mobo (1150 socket processor will fit it)so he can upgrade the processor when he want to to a 1155 haswell 4th gen processor.

haswel processor run hotter than previous gen processors, ive just bought a h100 corsair water cooler reconditioned liquid cooler from overclockers for £40.00 (it maybe the first gen h100 cooler but its better than stock and lets face it corsair although not good in many departments like memory modules I could have £40 on a fan assisted heatsink and not got the desired results sothe watercooler came as a plus and is holding up well) its kept my processor from 44.0c idle to 22.oc idle and never goes past 35.0c in games.

+1 for avoiding Corsair. I had one of their 64gb usb memory sticks that packed up after 3 months.

About fans, the lager and reliable are often better than small high speed ones that ware out, can be noisey, and jam.

make sure the fans have an air pathway through the case, and suck air in and push air out again, rather than fitting multiple fans all blowing into the box, or forming heat pockets

Don't worry about motherboard screws if buying a new case, they always come with them

Except the ones that don't - I have seen several cases now without screws. Or you get two. As they cost peanuts having a few more does no harm.

That's pretty nuts, what cases were they?
Every case I've bought in the past 20 years had a "full set" of screws - I've collected hundreds of them spare :)

The only ones I've not tended to get with cases, have been fan screws, and even then some of the better/more specialist cases cam with fan fitting methods (Antec lifestyle cases like the Sonata range sometimes come with rubber one use fan fixings).

Does the CPU kit come with thermal grease?
You will need some cable ties to keep the cables out of the way of the air flow.

Coolermaster heat sink? For real overclocking you will need liquid cooling.
