Recommend me a printer/scanner/copier

  • I bought an Epson WF-3520 about a year ago after extensive research, and it was definitely the right choice. It is a 4-in-1 (printer, scanner, copier, fax), and packed with useful features such as full duplex printing AND full duplex scanning via the built-in automatic document feeder, i.e. if you want to scan or copy a bunch of two sided documents, you just slot them in and it will take care of it.

Print quality is good even with generic inks; not quite up to laser standard on normal quality, but not far off. One of the best things, and one of the key reasons for my choice, is that running costs are very low because it can take extra large cartridges. XL size gives around 1000 pages per cartridge). Even better, there are perfectly good compatible cartridges around: a decent black XL cartridge with 1000-page capacity can be had from a number of places for as little as £6.95, giving a cost per page of £0.007! Colour cartridges come in similar sizes and prices, meaning that you'll never need to be pay more than 1p per sheet, B&W or colour. Laser printers at this price point are 4-5 times more expensive than this for replacement black toner, and even more for colour.

But a Samsung mono laser is about half the footprint of an AIO. And a basic scanner such as the Canon LIDE ones can be mounted on their side-so take up very little space.

    Unfortunately this is my problem:

Space is 48cm wide x 28cm high. A quick look at the cheapest Samsung laser and Canon scanner and the dimensions then I appear to be lacking the space needed and they would be above my budget and more than an all in one. But thanks very much for your help and your suggestions, much appreciated.

I think HP Officejet Pro 8600 will be suitable for you. If not this then you can look for Canon Pixma MG.

Unfortunately not at the price I'm seeing on the net, too far away from my "as much under £100 as possible" requirement.

DD has managed to get me the Canon Pixma MG3250 for under £40 and for the small amount of use it will get (compared to a lot of people) this seems to fit the bill very well. She's bringing it with her at the weekend and will set it up for me.

It's probably your power supply that's faulty, not the machine. If it doesn't turn on then it must be the power. It could even be the fuse.

You can get a replacement power supply at ebay. Type in your part number, like "hp power 0957 2119".

It's the same with HP monitors etc.

I didn't actually say that it doesn't turn on, in fact it did turn on but kept throwing up an error saying the colour printer cartridge was incorrectly inserted, despite me repeatedly taking it out and putting it back correctly, and because of this it wouldn't print. That, combined with a different problem with the scanning process plus the age of the printer, got me thinking enough is enough and it's had it's day.

New printer delivered by DD as mentioned in my last post, installed, up and running and I'm very pleased.
