  • The free ones always end up not being that free after all, they will spring an 'in app purchase' on you soon enough to keep using it!

    Bit of a con really.

I use spending log on iPhone, does exactly what you want, 69p up front and thats it.

Its not one of those dishonest ones that tricks you into getting your spending habits into it before refusing to work again until you spend a couple of quid.

Spending log on iPhone all the way!

Theres an iPad version as well and they work together.
  • I use spreadsheets on google docs. Then I have google drive on both my iPhone and my iPad. I've not really used it for day to day tracking but I may start. It's really easy to log into them on a computer as well which is good as our desktop doesn't have excell.

I've used several different apps over the last couple of years and didn't stick with any of them, some because of the complicated systems they used, some because I couldn't change it from $s to £s and some because of ads but if you find a good one I may give it a try!

  • I use "Spending Tracker" on my Iphone. Seems good so far.
This is the main one I keep hearing about so I'll definitely give it a go!

I know what you mean, some apps are so sneaky about getting you to pay!

Hadn't really considered google docs because I have excell, but I might look into transferring my spreadsheets.

  • I use Account Tracker on my iphone. It takes about an hour to set up initially as you have to put in all your income and outgoings on the days they come in/out of your account - you can set each one to repeat weekly, monthly, on certain dates etc. On a daily basis I log any spending on my debit card or money from the cashpoint, keeping the figure accurate and in real time. By doing this it allows me to see where I am now, in the past (for reference) and in the future, which enables me to see in advance when there's going to be a shortfall. Sometimes I look two or three weeks ahead and see I'm due to go overdrawn, so I sell something or move a bit over from my savings account to cover it.

I'd recommend this app to anyone. I started using it about a year ago and went from being over £500 overdrawn to in the black within a couple of months. There's a free version that you can start with but I soon bought the paid for version as I could see how valuable it would be (can't recall the price, sorry, but only a few £s). I still use and update it daily. The developer will answer questions very quickly too, if you email him - his name is Graham Haley.

    Genius app, imo.

This sounds exactly like what I want, to be honest! In terms of your outgoings though, are you able to accurately enter things like CC payments? With the way I'm snowballing, I'm not paying set amounts each month due to paying the min payment on my 0% cards while I hit my loan, so would I be able to put in my % payments and it work them out? Perhaps a bit too advanced, but just thought I'd ask.

  • In that case I'd set it to take account of the regular payment (say monthly SO or DD) then enter any extra payment manually. I pay a set amount to my CC but try to overpay more each month - my SO is taken into account automatically then if I pay an additional amount I just enter it manually.
  • If you want to stick to a particular budget per week "budgets-expense tracker" on iPhone is another good one. You can see what you've spent of your budget in these tubes that fill up per category. Also has an iPad version.

I use 'You Need a Budget', which is available as an app and a software download. At the moment I have a blackberry and there isn't a compatible app for it but I'll be upgrading in a few weeks so I'll probably get something android.

Anyway, the software is really good; you set your budget but you have to give every penny a job. So when you track your spending it asks you to put it into a category. That way you find yourself more accountable for your spending and it helps to keep you in check.

I also use this app and highly recommend.
  • Another very useful free tool is microsoft money deluxe plus. It is a pc based software but extremely useful - you can even reconcile the accounts by downloading most bank/credit card statements
