Civil Service Redundancy

My partner aged 52 at present is going to be made redundant in the next couple of years, maybe 2014 but at the latest March/Apr 2015, I am 57 and working 12 hours a week earning £78. My question is would we be able to claim anything other than Jobseekers Allowance Contribution based. We have a mortgage on our property so would not qualify for Housing Benefit, Im not sure about Council Tax benefit. Obviously he intends getting another job but is 18% disabled so cannot do a manual job.

Any ideas please, I realise it is a bit early to be enquiring but would like to get things straight in my mind. Thank you

How many years service does he have? The lump sum will affect many benefit payments.

Plus, as he is over 50 is he eligible for an early pension package instead of redundancy?

He will have just under 12 years of service and has written off requesting details of a package but not yet had a reply. I realise that I am jumping the gun a bit here but its really worrying me as my wages and his JSA doesnt nearly cover the bills. As things stand I understand we could pay off some of the mortgage with some of any lump sum he receives and still get JSA but just wondered if there could be any other financial help.

Yes, I think he could take his pension, I think it is a Classic pension but he said he would lose about 35% if he takes it early. I think he could perhaps pay some of the lump sum into the pension. Will need to get more advice here.

I took early retirement in 2012, 10 years early. The 50% reduction I would have had on my pension was made up by the redundancy payment I was due.

Have the current severance packages changed this?

You need to get the current rules and see what they say.

I think this will be worth considering but the final decision will be down to my partner. Hopefully when he receives a reply it will set out all the options. When we know more I suppose we will have to look into the benefit side then. Thank you for your help, I may be back for more help after Xmas.

If anyone has more info on any benefits we could be entitled to, please let me know.

I suggest your partner requests a pre-retirement course. All this should be covered there. I did one a little before taking early retirement in March 2010 and it was very useful

If things go to plan he intends getting another job asap, but I am just thinking that this may not be so easy especially as he has to avoid any sort of lifting. I would have thought the Civil Service may provide some advice but dont know if this is the case so will bear this in mind, thank you.

Well I might be able to do extra at times to cover holidays etc but probably not permanent hours although as the time gets closer things might change staffwise so will ask for a few more hours if any of my colleagues leave, retire etc. This could well happen if the timescale extends to 2015.
