OK, does the attachment appear in the email in the correct format e.g. 'IAmAPicture.jpg' or is it missing the .jpg bit off the end?

Also, try copying the attachment to your desktop, then right click it, choose the 'open with' option and you should see a choice along the lines off windows picture viewer or windows photo viewer. Choose that and the file should open.

    :)

The jpg only visible when i hover over icon.
docx still not opening even with download

neither will do the open with option.

Which version of Word/Office do you have installed ? Older versions won't open .docx or .xlsx files without the Compatability Pack installed.
Try resetting the file associations via Control Panel, something may have corrupted.

i hv word 2010 but it seems to be playing up and 'not responding'

Then if you can't open Word, you're not going to be able to open Word files either...
Can you open any Word files that you already have in your Documents folder? Office 2010 will open .docx files without any additional add ons, so that isn't the issue.

So it sounds to me like the topic of this thread is actually the least of your problems. You've got more general PC problems to sort first.

What do you mean by 'blank file'?
Have you tried saving the files to your Docs or desktop first, before opening them directly or in Word?

bod1467 - how do I work out the more general problems what they are ?

macman - I have tried saving and opening from desktop but no data etc showing in files - I know from my windows phones there is defo info in there.

ETA - forwarded emails to a friend who was able to open attachments and print them off for me on her computer (running windows 8) - at least I have my attachments.
