What are the attachments? It's probably more to do with their file format or source program version (e.g. Word 2010 vs Word 2003) than anything to do with W8 vs W7?0

OK, does the attachment appear in the email in the correct format e.g. 'IAmAPicture.jpg' or is it missing the .jpg bit off the end?
Also, try copying the attachment to your desktop, then right click it, choose the 'open with' option and you should see a choice along the lines off windows picture viewer or windows photo viewer. Choose that and the file should open.

Which version of Word/Office do you have installed ? Older versions won't open .docx or .xlsx files without the Compatability Pack installed.
Try resetting the file associations via Control Panel, something may have corrupted. No free lunch, and no free laptop
