WRITE (pen and paper) and send first class from two post office to the address for the serving of notices. Get free certificates of posting.

Ask the landlord who supplies the electricity to your flat.

It is possible the previous tenant changed this and they do not know but you need this is writing from them.

Where do I get the address for serving of notices ?
When I moved in, the statement I got from letting agent stated e-on were my supplier and that's who I contacted with the meter reading and that's were it snowballed to now.
But that could have happened (the tenant changing to a different supplier).
    Cheers.

Read your tenancy agreement. It is a legal requirement.

I have no idea whether Chenille is a troll or not, but I do know that I had a very similar situation with EDF and that no matter how many times I contacted them with full details including meter readings and meter number, they simply took no notice. And because they wouldn't issue an account number, there was no way that I could pay.

Fortunately when I waseventually landed with the huge bill (addressed to 'The Occupier' despite having told them zillions of times who I was) I had the money to pay.

I finally used the expression 'formal complaint' which meant I got to someone who actually took action.

ANSWER THE QUESTIONS otherwise no one can advise you.
In particular: what does your tenancy agreement say about the utility/electricity charges?

If the tenancy agreement makes you responsible, then this is between you and E-on. Nothing to do with the landlord or agency.

If the tenancy agreement says the rent includes electricity, then the landlord/agency is at fault for not paying E-on.

If the tenancy agreement says you will be billed separately by the landlord (via the agent perhaps) for electricity, then if/when the landlord gives you a bill, pay it. Meanwhile you have noobligation topay E-on, but should facilitate the installation of a meter if/when requested.

Eviction? By who? For what reason ?

(Of course, if your tenancy is Periodic (monthly) no reason is needed).

It is a monthly periodic tenancy agreement, could they evict me because of the electric problem ?
  • I know this can happen (two years without a bill) because it happened to me years ago. At the time I had a council flat, and I phoned and I phoned the utility company concerned asking why no bills. Was told it would be sorted but it wasn't. Then after about two years, someone finally came round to read the meter and I received a very large bill. Fortunately as I was a student, I was allowed to pay a small sum off to clear the debt (this wasn't a recent event) each month. It took me some years.

Yes I know I should have put x amount away a month but I'm afraid as a student, things were paid when they knocked me on the head and said 'You Must Pay Now' as I was quite impoverished.

I was never given a clear explanation as to what went wrong. Thank god, its never happened again.

    In my rental agreement ..
'pay direct to the appropriate authority all charges for gas, electricity fuel and water which shall be consumed or supplied on or to the property'.
Just electricity and water and bang up-to-date with the water.
    Seems very clear.

    1) this issue is nothing to do with the landlord as it is between you and the electricity supplier
    2) you could be evicted by the landlord (which appears to be one of your concerns) in the usual way via a S21Notice either when your fixed term runs out or at any time during a Periodic (monthly) tenancy, subject to the required notice and court process
    3) you could NOT be evicted by the LL via a S8 notice under any ofthe 17 grounds (eg ground 8 rent arrears) since you owe the LL nothing for electricity and are not in arrears
    4) Give the electricity supplier the meter number.
    5) Read:

Did you pay it off using a card payment meter or do you know if this is possible ?
