Bus driver without change.

Options
Hello, I got a bus home earlier and only had a £10 note, the driver had no change and was about to kick me off when a nice lady offered me two £5 notes in exchange for it, was it my right to ride anyway, as I had the money, or could he of told me to get off? Not a big issue I know but just wondering what the rules are on this, Thanks.

You need to ask the bus company for their policy on this.

If you are a 'vulnerable person', they should carry you anyway and seek the fare later.

Aside from that, I hope you have learnt from this episode to try and keep some change with you if planning to buy a bus ticket. ;)

Some bus companies have a no change policy. If it didn't and the driver indicated he was not going to permit you to travel because of his or his firms incompetence then I think I might let him summon the law and decline to move. I think you would then find he would likely swear under his breath, offer some meaningless threats about prosecution and move off to avoid offending 27 other passengers. Mind you I think I'd hope someone else wanted to get off at my stop if it were a request stop.

Is it not a bus service which gets funding from the council who you pay rates to. So as a service they should provide change.

I don't know where you are in the country, around here, it is clearly signed, please tender the correct fare, the driver does not have to have change for you.

Do they also post the fare so you can get the correct change? I've never seen those signs, but drivers always have change here.

In Reading, the bus drivers don't carry change, so if you don't have the exact fare, you end up paying more.

Our buses have notices saying no change given too. Drivers never handle cash, you put the fare in a "box" and you get a ticket - never any change given. If you dont know the fare tough, you still get no change if you dont have the correct money.

Travelling by Arriva buses one day, I discovered I only had a £10 note for a £5 fare. The driver refused to take me and insisted I get off the bus... I offered to pay £10 for the journey without any expectation of change and he still refused!

Fortunately he invited me to either leave the bus or to "stay on and we won't go anywhere". So I took a seat and waited for the next bus due an hour later. At least I was warm... and eventually got to where I was going without paying a penny when the driver decided he didn't want to sit at the bus stop all day. :)

Anyway, I wouldn't expect a driver to have change... Although I would expect them to give out change if they have it (unless they have an "exact change only" policy). And I would expect them to allow customers to over-pay. On Arriva buses, there are signs by the driver that say something like, "We may not be able to change £20 notes or higher".

It is ridiculous that they do not carry change. Last year I was fortunate enough to be able to go to Japan where you could hand over a 10, 000 yen note(approximately equivalent to £100 ) and the drivers would take it without. any complaints and give you change. We could certainly learn from them!!!
