Any problem using energy saving bulbs with dimmers if you don't actual dim them?

Options
What is the reason for standard cfl and led bulbs not being recommended for use with dimming switches? If you do not use the dimming function(i.e. just as a normal on/off switch) then would it be ok to use these types of bulbs with them?

  • should work ok but will flicker when its in a dimming mode. on "full" then should work fine

Long term use will breaker either the dimmer or the bulbs or both. Normally dimmers are to be used with a minimum of 60W of bulb load - cfls and LED bulbs are normally in the 5-20W range so you are under loading the dimmer - which is why it won't operate correctly.

You can get low load dimmers which get round this problem - but the cfl or LED bulbs still need to be dimmable

CFL are fine. They don't dim properly (they're on or off) so if you try to dim them they'll be struggling to light, which can wear them out faster. If you just flick the switch right round you'll be fine.
I *THINK* the same symptoms will apply if you buy a non-dimmable LED.

Sam, if you want to discuss LED and dimmer technology, you are welcome here. But if you are looking for partnerships and commercial deals then this is not the place. You might as well ask the Wizard of Oz to give you a big number as pay a Credit Referencing Agency for a so-called 'credit-score'
