What led to both of them getting involved? Was one person holding both leads?

Nope, my OH had the girl & we stopped when we saw it. My two were stood together.

Only if the local council has "said" so.... bye laws & all that stuff.

No, dogs are required by law to be under control in public places - but off-lead doesn't mean out of control, and nor does on-lead mean in control (I have heard of a couple of cases of on-lead dogs being deemed out of control)

Dogs do need to be on-lead next to designated highways, but not every road is a designated highway.

Hmm, so was your OH unable to control the second dog enough to stop her getting into the fight too or did they both kick off at the same time?

None of this was your fault, but obviously you don't want this happening again, it could be much worse on another occasion.

It is a cause for concern, I don't like my dogs biting anythng but then I don't know what I could have done to avoid it. If there's a way of teaching a dog to defend itself gently I'm all ears.
I reckon a few weeks of frustration, on both sides, exploded into a 30 second incident

I've been out with them several times since, meeting other dogs & they're as they always were... pretty much ignoring everything & doing their own thing.

Things could have been a lot worse & I'm pretty relieved that it's turned out like it has.

I think a big part of the problem is that they are littermates. Their threshold is low and they will react much more quickly kicking each other off.

It may be worth taking them out on their own individually, although at 7 I suspect the bond will be pretty well established - still worth trying.

Other than that, management. I have eyes in the back of my head and will be on the alert for other dogs and change direction to avoid problems.

How lovely. I hope you never have the experience of a mastiff hunting so no noise, comes quickly from behind to grab one of your dogs to get at your OH. If it had gone for the male first he would be dead and my OH would be even more seriously injured luckily it went for my female who BIT IT had she been muzzled both dogs would be dead and my OH would have been seriously injured/dead.

Had they been walked separately it would have killed OH and male, female not so much my dogs will never be muzzled.
Oh and eyes in the back of you head wouldn't have made a difference.

What!????? I have no idea what you are referring to or what relevance to this situation.

I don't think it was lack of control, just that they were stood closely together & it got in reach of both. I'll hold my hands up & say that I didn't think for a second it would do what it did, even though it was running at us I fully expected it to veer off or stop.

I think it caught my two by surprise too, as they just stood watching it.... no noise or pulling.

They will go out on their own but they're not happy. It's a convenience/enjoyment thing for us to take them together & nothing has happened before..... they're the only DDBs round here & all the regular walkers know them, nobody crosses the road to get out of the way. It's not like they're the neighbourhood "hoodies" ;)

"Eyes in the back of my head" :) I'd seen it though but, as said above, it caught me totally by surprise

I will never muzzle my dogs either because if they are attacked they will be unable to defend themselves.

As mellymoo says, if a dog is attacked by a vicious dog and the victim dog is muzzled, it could end up dead.

My own male dog would definitely have been killed had he been wearing a muzzle when attacked.
