I posted on here many times procrastinating about having our elderly cat rosie pts.
The vet came on wednesday and I have to say it went exactly as I wanted.
We prepared the kids the night before, we were very open and honest with them and they spent the evening petting her and feeding her titbits of her favourite foods, she'd pretty much stopped eating but was willing to have a few bits of chicken and some dreamies.
We kept the kids off school as they were very very upset but they went to nan's before the vet came.
I have to say watching them say goodbye all but broke my heart but I was glad they had the opportunity and I think they were too.
The vet was lovely, very gentle and kind, rosie was fast asleep on my knee and apart from a murmur of protest when they clipped her fur, she was very peaceful as if she knew and was ready.
I was determined to hold it together whilst it was done, I didn't want rosie to sense my upset and I did, though afterwards was very hard.
The vet again was so kind and understanding, we talked about rosie and what a wonderful cat she was.
So after 18 yrs my faithful companion has gone, we decorated a box for her, sprayed it gold and lined it with her favourite blanket.
The kids wanted to see her when they got back, she was in the box on her bed, I had reservations but wanted them to see how peaceful she was and it was fine, they stroked her and said goodbye, I think it was good for them.
We wrote messages on the box and put her under her favourite tree, she would spend all summer sunbathing under it, and laid roses on it.
I haven't written this to upset anyone, just to let anyone else dreading making the decision as I did know that it can be a very lovely positive experience.
I feel glad to have done this final act of kindness for my dear dear friend and know I did the right thing.
So thanks again to people who posted on my other threads, you were a great support.

I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

What a wonderful way to depart this world! I am sure Rosie could not have wished for a better life (and passing over) than she had with you and your family.

Thank you both it was lovely and I actually feel a great weight has been lifted as I had known it was coming for a few months.
We are all slowly coming to terms with it but it is still hard.
Not helped by the 3 yr old telling me every day she misses rosie and asking when shes coming back but hopefully that will stop soon.
Upset myself by looking at kittens on the cats rescue site, felt like a betrayal almost but I have always had cats and the house feels wrong without one.
Lyla bless her suggested we get another black cat and call her rosie.I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.0 -
I am so glad it worked out as you wanted it to. There is never an easy way, but that sounds as if it couldn't have gone better either for Rosie or for your family.0

Poem For Cats
And God asked the feline spirit
Are you ready to come home?
Oh, yes, quite so, replied the precious soul
And, as a cat, you know I am most able
To decide anything for myself.
Are you coming then? asked God.
Soon, replied the whiskered angel
But I must come slowly
For my human friends are troubled
For you see, they need me, quite certainly.
But don't they understand? asked God
That you'll never leave them?
That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?
That nothing is created or destroyed?
It just is....forever and ever and ever.
Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.0 -
Sorry to hear about Rosie, it's difficult to let them go, I lost my cat Katy Age 22 in Aug 2012, she is buried in my back garden, my son has just got me a lovely plaque with her name on it and shaped like a cat, for Xmas to put on her little garden. Sending you hugs at this sad time.0

I'm so sorry for your loss. I did the same thing myself just yesterday, and was glad to find that it was a painless process, and I feel so much better that my cat isn't suffering anymore. My condolences

It is sad and one of the most difficult things when having a pet. I am having my lovely boy guinea pig put to sleep tomorrow, he has kidney failure and it is time for him to be off. You story has helped me feel better about it all.
so thank you xxx and so sorry XXXNevertheless she persisted.0
