Once my iphone 5 is fully charged the battery seems to go down very quickly for example from 100% it will go down to 64% in about 4 hours and thats with no apps open and with 1 call made. Is this common with the iphone or could there be a fault with the phone, should really last alot longer.

The biggest battery hogs are the screen and location services, are either of those running? Even apps in the background may use data and call on services, or setting geotagged locations can draw juive

Driving to work with Waze on uses about 20-30 % battery per half hour as it uses both.

If you really have everything closed it may be a battery fault, and you'd need to get Apple to look at it.

In addition to apps and location services, Bluetooth and WiFi as well as 3G/4G also can take a large hit - everything on will result in what you descrice?
  • I turn off-

    Airdrop (don't use it).
    Bluetooth (don't use it).
All location services except Find My iPhone (including the system service ones) unless I need the maps.
Push notifications for email (only use it for personal email so hourly fetch is fine).
Push notifications for most apps (I don't need to know immediately if Words With Friends is waiting for me to take a go or if I've been tagged in a FB post).
Notifications except for calls, messages, email, and calendar.

None of this cripples the phone for my usage and the battery lasts a day easily with a fair bit of browsing and music thrown in.
