Even with the region coding fixed you may have a playack issue with some extras on UK BD. The films will be ok, but some discs have extras like the making of encoded at 50Hz PAL which a lot of American players don't do. I know a lot of Americans had this issue with the UK Harry Potter films that they bought from here due to the UK set being a lot cheaper. Also it may have the same problem with UK DVD. What model of player are you looking at?
Right now I'm mostly interested in the OPPO-BDP103 and as far as I can tell, the 50Hz thing isn't an issue with this player. I can get a region free model at around the $600 mark which puts me just below the import VAT threshold. The cheapest UK version I've been able to find cost £575.0 -
A very good choice, I have their 93 with the solderless mod kit
You'll end up with RSI with the cheap mod though
My understanding is that Oppo enforce a minimum price0
