US Blu Ray Player

I'm going to the States early next year and I'm thinking about bringing back a Blu Ray player. Aside from having to use an adaptor for the plug, are there any issues I need to be aware of? I mean, can a US Blu Ray player straightforwardly be hooked up to a UK TV? I'm aware of the region coding issue but I want to get a region free player.

  • You need to look at a specialist forum for the answer to this.
  • Why must you import an American player, what is so special about it to make the delay unimportant, is some one gifting it to you?

What is wrong with this link??

With the imported player, how will you pay for shipping if it needs a repair during the first 12 months?

International waranties are for mobile items and on the say so of manufacturers. Were you are going is not even Europe

The prices. The player I want is about £100 cheaper stateside. I'm aware of the potential issues regarding warranties and repairs but that's a risk I'm happy to take.

Thanks to HereToday for the link, I'll check that out.

You won't just need an 'adaptor' for the plug, you'll need a proper 110v power supply. Have you factored the cost of this in?

How much should you pay in import duty and VAT if you go by the book and declare it at customs?

Does your TV cope with NTSC?

Thanks although the players I'm looking at are listed as "110-240 volts for worldwide use" so I assumed it wouldn't need a separate power supply? My NTSC dvd's and laserdisc's play fine on my TV so also assumed that wouldn't be an issue. Good point about the import VAT, the price is just above the allowance for the player I was most keen on so that's something I'll need to think about.

The link I gave you, their players are all good brands that do what you are asking as is for quite modest money as is, no mains converters or extra taxes to pay I'd budget £35 for a mains converter from Amazon

I don't doubt they sell good brands but I can get what I want a lot cheaper in the States so I don't see why I should buy from them.
  • As I said previously there is the serious possibility of a mains conveter at about £35---There is also the need to keep below the import duty and tax threshhold, or cover their costs---Airlines have baggage allowances that if you go over them could easilly cost you £15 per K.G.
You also admit allready that you have to cover the waranty your self, so that lot together is most of your savings gone.

If you can claim that UK shops are ripping you off for £100, why not just identify the player you have in mind so that I/ some one else can see if the gap can be reduced

Even with the region coding fixed you may have a playack issue with some extras on UK BD. The films will be ok, but some discs have extras like the making of encoded at 50Hz PAL which a lot of American players don't do. I know a lot of Americans had this issue with the UK Harry Potter films that they bought from here due to the UK set being a lot cheaper. Also it may have the same problem with UK DVD. What model of player are you looking at?
  • Lumstorm--A very good point--I'd hope that our colleague realizes that he is going to need two players to do what he wants
