Talking about redundancy?

Hi - I was informed by conference call on Tuesday that my role is being made redundant. The official end of my role is currently 27th January 2014, however all week I am being told that we are in a consultation period and no redundancies have been confirmed. I know this is a technicality and there is no chance that my role will continue, and there will be no alternative position that is suitable so I will definitely be leaving the company at the end of January.
I have told a handful of my regular customers that I am being made redundant, which has got back to my manager. She is quite cross as she had asked that this information be kept confidential to protect the business. My question is, am I obliged legally to keep quiet and not tell anyone about the redundancies? I am worried that I could forfeit my redundancy package (which is quite generous) or be somehow penalised.

Woops. what did you say?
Until you are terminated you are under a contract of employment there are obligations that come with that.
Looking for a new job and networking is something you can do at any time.
Looks like you did this in a way that did not go down well.
Telling people(especially customers) a company might be making redundancies before it is public or you are on notice is never a good idea.
Recruitment agents sus it out when they get a load of people looking for jobs.
There are a few options the company has if they are upset
I guess they could withdraw any current termination plans and go for gross misconduct if they wanted.0 -
Thanks but I need accurate legal advice, not conjecture and assumptions.0

In which case you really need a good employment solicitor who can advise you not people on an internet forum.
Been there myself recently the letter I had and the meeting that put us on notice of consultation asked for confidentiality, your company chose to tell you by conference call I am not sure I would be happy with that however it could be legal.0 -
The obligations that getmore4less mentioned include the duty of trust and confidence - which you breached.
