I always look at the best sellers and click on the 'free' tab:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Best-Sellers-Kindle-Store-eBooks/zgbs/digital-text/341689031/ref=zg_bs_fvp_p_f_341689031?_encoding=UTF8&tf=1

You can drill down into different genres such as horror, sci-fi etc by clicking on fiction and then the particular category that you fancy.

For instance, here's action and adventure:

I've pretty much stopped the free books now. I used to do as you've described and then looked more closely at books with a lot of reviews at 4-5 stars. The daily deals sometimes have books I'm interested in. It's odd the way in which none will appear for a while and then there's a whole spate to cost me a fortune.
    . . .I did not speak out

    Then they came for me
And there was no one left
    To speak out for me..

Having a kindle means you can download FREE books off amazon :D

    I absolutely love mine

There are loads of free books available for the Nook and the Kobo too, and you're not tied in to Amazon. I've had my Kobo a year and only bought one book so far. There's plenty of free good books to read on various websites.

I love my Kobo (they're currently on offer in Smiths) and I can borrow books from the library on it. Mr Imp has a Nook which he really likes too.

Have a hudl and a kindle so feel highly qualified to answer this one :D

If its for your dad I would go for the Kindle - I think Tesco or John Lewis are doing them for £49 at the moment if your quick.

I have had the kindle wifi, and currently have the paperwhite, and I would recommend the £49 wifi one. The paperwhite is over-engineered and overpriced and the mildest touch turns the page prematurely.

I like the paperwhite but if I could go back in time I would never have bothered purchasing it.

The Hudl is a great tablet (but they have sold out and are going on ebay for £50 over list price). Its not a kindle and its battery life is only 25% of that of a kindle in real world use.

If he wants it for reading books - go for the kindle.
