Hudl v Kindle (book reading)

Hi Guys,

I wondered if you could help me with a tablet technology question.

I would like to buy my Dad a device similar to a kindle, he's been looking at several different ones. I have some tesco vouchers and thought I might get him a hudl (tescos own version).

Primarily he wants it for reading and downloading books (he has a laptop for everything else).

Is the hudl a fair comparison to a kindle in your opinion? I've read Tesco reviews and they look good (but then they would be wouldnt they!!!) ;)

Thanks.

If he wants it only for reading, then you probably can't beat a kindle paperwhite.

The hudl is a tablet, it's not a dedicated book reader.

If he wants it to read books, get him a Kindle (or a Nook, or Kobo, depending on where he'll be getting the books from). Ebook readers use the e-ink technology, much, much easier on the eyes than an LCD screen.

Edit: when I say Kindle, I mean the basic Kindle ebook reader, or the Kindle Paperwhite.

Not to be confused with the Kindle HD tablet (which, as the name suggest, is a tablet and not an ebook reader).
  • Ok thank you very much. I'll look into those options.

The only thing with a Kindle is that it only supports one format of ebook so he may not be able to borrow books from the library , it's worth checking what ebooks his library supports if he's likely to want to do that. That was the deciding factor in stopping using my Kindle and it also really pee'd me off that new release ebooks are the same price as a proper physical book.

Hmm, they're not great books though.

You can do that on Android tablets too though, with the Kindle app (and I would assume the same app exists for iPads and Windows based tablets).

As far as the OP goes, I have a Nexus 7 tablet and a Kindle. While I can read books on the Nexus 7 and in fact do a lot of reading on the Nexus 7 of various file formats, the Kindle is vastly superior for reading alone. I can't really comment on the Hudl but the Nexus 7 is a more advanced overall tablet than the Hudl so I wouldn't think that there would be a significant advantage in a Hudl over a Nexus 7 for reading.

If the device you want to buy him is exclusively for reading then I would highly recommend the Kindle. If there is the possibility of doing other things like email, Youtube, web browsing etc. then I'd look at a tablet.

Just remember that a Kindle Fire (HD or otherwise) is not a standard Kindle e-reader, it's a tablet.

Ah, I meant the Kindle Fire when I said Kindle HD...Ooopss!
  • I think a kindle (with the paperwhite technology) is brilliant. ANd there are a lot of extremely good books which are either free or very cheap indeed.

  • Ereaders are easier on the eye and battery life is much better. I have a kindle and find the free books great as well as many of the ones that cost a couple of pounds.
