Where to buy first Sofa

  • I would suggest John Lewis, they do cost more than DFS and the like but they are built to last, they are comfy and well made.

Best bit of advice we got when starting out is buy good quality furniture that is built to last. Buying short term disposable furniture Argos, Ikea, DFS etc is often a false economy and in the long term costs you more if you are having to replace it every few years. Only thing I would add is make sure like what you buy and you find it comfy (oh and measure up properly to make sure it fits in the room).

Ordering furniture off the internet without trying it is a big gamble and one I would advise against.

My first new sofas were from Ikea. Cheapest of the range almost .... and 17 years later they were still as good as new. I sold them as I was moving house without having a forwarding address....

But that site mentioned above's going in my bookmarks as I'll need a new sofa in the next 12 months or so and they look cheap. Price is king with me. No kids, no pets and I dont' jump on furniture.

I've heard good reviews about potters sofa online and they are reasonable prices too in Yorkshire but they seem to deliver all over https://www.facebook.com/PottersSofa?fref=ts

Another vote for ikea. I got 2 sofas there for what I would pay for 1 elsewhere. Also got the ones with removable/machine washable fabric covers. So not cold like leather, but fully whasable whenever the need arises.

You can also buy replacement covers in different colours so you can change to suit the decor or if you fancy a change.
This is WAY more fun than monopoly.
  • We bought from M&S last time and well made and look out for offers if buying more than one piece. They also offer up to 2 years Interest free if spending I think more than £1k in store which they don't advertise widely so ask in store.
You would need a larger M&S to see some of the furniture but our Abbey furniture looks great and seems to be well made (hard wood frame) and resilient so far

Another one to look at is Sofasofa who seem to make pretty decent quality for price and always have a good annual sale

Ikea isn't bad for price in fairness even though not made the traditional way, some of their mid to higher priced stuff can last very well indeed. I think the Ektorp is the worlds best selling sofa all over the world
  • I agree with Ikea.

A lot of the ranges in Ikea have mix and match pieces that you can buy to fit the space you have, and covers are usually interchangeable and machine washable. Great for spills and mind changes

We are actually really happy with our leather sofas from DFS. Still looking very good after 9 years, despite our 3 year old's best efforts with trampolining and food spillages. Ours were from their pricier range, but there was a big difference in the quality of the leather.

I've just brought an abbey sofa and two chairs from Marks and Spencers, it's lovely, very well made and good quality. Would certainly recommend

If you want to be an MSE then it has to be leather every time. I guarantee that if you buy fabric you will need to replace it before if you had leather.

For long life you want foam filled fixed cushions- don't be fooled by those lovely looking plump cotton covered sofas they need a lot of maintenance to keep them looking nice.

I spent two years selling furniture and the leather sofas I bought in 2001 are still as good as the day I got them and expect to get another 10 years out of them- no fabric sofa would have lasted this long in my house.
