Google thinks we are in Portugal

  • I am in England. It matters because daughter uses gmail and other things that means she has to sign into Google. Also google searches (I know other ones are available) keeps turning into Portuguese and I cannot understand Portuguese. My IP address seems to be showing Barking - about 10 miles away.

The first time I accessed the internet on my then-new iPhone 4, I was on a ferry going to France. It picked up Google.fr and from then on, every time I launched Google it defaulted to the French version. Everything in French, search results in French, the lot. Even typing in google.co.uk in the address bar took me to the .fr site. It didn't really bother me as I don't use the internet on my phone very often, but this lasted about a year. Now it defaults to Google.co.uk, and I haven't done anything different.

    A mystery.

Might be worth clearing cookies. It could be that google are using a different ip/location resolver than the site I linked to.

The good news is that at least one geolocator is showing the UK so I imagine it will correct itself in time. Did you try power cycling the router as I suggested?
  • Can't get to router very easily as in loft. Will try later. Thanks for suggestions so far.
  • Slightly off topic question but why have you got your router in the loft?
