Google thinks we are in Portugal

Hi
whenever we try to use Google in the last couple of days, it thinks we are in Portugal. This is happening on different devices and whether we are logged in to a Google account or not. We can change the language settings, but not the location settings (asks for Portuguese address). Daughter cannot change language back to English on her phone. We use AOL broadband at home - have not yet tried outside the house on different provider.
Any ideas
Thanks
Louise

What web browser are you using?
What sort of phone does your daughter have?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?
  • My phone (HTC one) sometimes shows my location as the USA when I access the internet via my home router (I'm with AOL as well).

I was thinking that maybe it's something to do with where the main AOL server is located.
  • Daughter has S3mini probably using chrome. I have tried using Firefox on my laptop and similar problem
  • Now even amazon thinks we are in Portugal - offering free delivery!

Probably your ISP has bought a new-to-them block of IP addresses from some business located in Portugal and the geo information hasn't been updated yet.

Check where http://whatismyipaddress.com/ thinks you are located.

You may get a fresh IP if you power down your router for a while and then restart it.

Out of interest, are you in Portugal? (just realised that no one has asked that yet)

Because it will default the language & search results.

Because results are location dependent - google.co.uk favours uk sites in the results which is very often what you want.

Same with global shopping sites such as amazon and ebay - you want the uk version.
