  • Well I am sat in my posh frock ready to go to the new years ball in our lovely hotel. This is what I am usually frugal the rest of the year for. I like the odd extravagant treat and its our xmas pressie to ourselves.

Happy new year to all us frugalites.

Well after the horrible letter the postman delivered yesterday, I had a lovely surprise from one of my neighbours as he delivered me a bottle of wine after I fixed a pair of trousers for him :D Also, my neighbour on the other side handed over a whole hamper of goodies that she'd 'overbought' over the holidays and wouldn't use (she lives alone) so my kids promptly attacked the sweets and cakes while I figured out what to make with the rest! Which got me to thinking about favours for favours - does anyone do this? Provide a service in return for payment in kind rather than in cash? I remember my parents doing it years ago when they used to run a pub (they would offer out free use of the function room in return for fixing something in the flat, for example) but I wondered if it was something that people still did and how it works out? I also thought it would be a good idea for presents instead of material things - an IOU for babysitting or an offer of doing a days ironing. I've also vowed to make birthday cakes as presents this year for the adults as it's something everyone says they want but never get and after doing a free sugarcraft course this year, I feel confident enough to do it!
Hope everyone enjoys the New Year celebrations and are all looking forward to a very frugal 2014 x
I gave as part of my DGD's Birthday present - an IOU - a day's baking with Nannie. I provided all the recipes and ingredients - DGD took home most of the makes. A present that she will always remember.

  • evening everyone!

mum2one, thanks for posting the recipes, I have all the ingredients for the biccies so will be baking with my children tomorrow.:j

Thanks to everyone regarding their comments about the sun holidays.
Will give it a go in 2014.

Went to the farm shop this morning, it was closed.:(
Went to l!dl instead for milk, cheese, fruit, veg & breakfast cereal.
    Grand total £10.90.:j:j
Have gone through contents of freezer, enough meals for next two weeks. It is mostly home cooked food although a couple of meals are lacking labels!!!!!!!

At work yesterday we talked about any plans we had for tonight.
I told everyone I would be asleep. Since becoming a parent I value my sleep more than a night out!!!!!!!
Amazingly everyone else said they would also be staying at home celebrating quietly too.

I can't wait for 2014 as 2013 has been awful. We were burgled in july and I was hit by a car whilst using a zebra crossing taking my children to school. Car failed to stop so this is ongoing. Hopefully this won't eat too much into 2014.

Anyway I wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!:dance::dance::dance:

Hi all, I'd like to join please. I started off last year but got a bit lost along the way...

Anyhoo, I've resolved to get all my debt paid off by Jan '15, which will mean being strictly frugal and somehow making an extra £20 a day from somewhere:eek: but if I don't try it won't happen for sure eh?

I will be back with a budget shortly, in the meantime
    HAPPY NEW YEAR

  • Right, mega-spreadsheet completed, budgets set, lets do this!!! This is my first time at looking at it over a whole year and I really like the idea of it, along with sticking rigidly to my 2-weekly and monthly plans.

I've tried to keep up with the thread but its gone too fast and life has been too hectic over the past couple of weeks, so hopefully from tomorrow I'll be able to stay with it!!

Happy New Year everyone, here goes.....................
