I've always found the Calais places to be a bit depressing. If you're going to stock up on wine in France you may as well go to a big supermarket/hypermarket and buy a load of French wine, which is really good value. Can't for the life of me understand why people go to British run stores in Calais to buy Aussie wine for a couple of quid cheaper. May as well just look for a deal in the UK.

exactly and even cheaper at lidl or aldi

the majority of people who buy and drink wine just buy it for the price or the fancy label anyways

If buying on price then you'd be daft to buy in this country.
The duty and VAT on a single bottle here is £2.60 whereas in France it is £0.03.
So in a £4 bottle in France you have wine valued at three times what you get in the UK. another way of looking at it is buying slightly cheaper in France yet actually having far better wine to drink. It also suits people who have an aversion to paying taxes.
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

  • If you want cheap wine I found some ok bottles of South African White in Lidl in Calais for under €2. It's normally £4 a bottle here and it was drinkable.

I can also recommend curry flavour crisps from Carrefour.
