Uni interview but dont want to go

Options
Hi
my child has had 3 offers for uni out of 5 so far and one of them they have a interview. Trouble is that uni is there last choice and really don't want to attend that one. If they do no go to the interview and advise them of this will it affect the other one they have applied at and does it go down on record? They didn't want to waste expenses money if they didn't really want to go there for the interview. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
Things will get better day by day.

There's not enough info here to answer the question meaningfully.

    Are the other offers unconditional?

If not, what are the conditions?

How likely is your child to meet the terms of those conditions?

What if your child fails to meet the terms of the conditional offers?

What is the relative status of the various universities in question?

Unless your child has an unconditional offer from the university of his or her first choice, then IMHO it's foolish to pass up the offer of an interview.

Unless something like fraud is discovered, your application to one uni won't affect the applications elsewhere.

I guess only your child knows how likely they are to meet the conditions of their current offers and how suitable this one might be as a "backup". Would they rather go here than enter clearing if things don't go as planned with exams in the summer? If so, might be best off going to the interview.

If not, it won't affect the offers from the other universities. Obviously it's polite to tell the university rather than not turning up and they can offer the interview slot to someone else.

No obligation to attend and the other universities won't even know.

At the end of the day, by March you will have had to choose just two offers to retain, so if this is one that won't be retained then there is little point in going.

So your child has applied for their five university choices through UCAS.
They have (From your post) been given three conditional offers (You can come to uni if you get 300 UCAS points etc).
They have been offered an interview from option four, and are still awaiting a response from offer five.

If they have decided that option four is really not something they want to do, too far away, wouldn't like it, etc etc, they can just go onto the UCAS website and withdraw their application from that university. However they should also email/write/phone and let them know they won't be attending the interview, and that they have withdrawn their application through the UCAS Track system.

They are then left with three offers, and one university who hasn't responded.
None of the universities you apply for are able to see what other choices you've made, whether that be university or course - all a university gets from your UCAS application is your contact details, personal information, education history and personal statement. If you accept them as a firm and back up place they also get access to your exam results. So if you've applied for English at the University of Manchester, and also Mechanics at the University of Wales, the University of Manchester can't see this other choice.

None of your options would be told what decisions you have made with regards to the other options - they are only told things which specifically affect them, so no they wouldn't be told that your child has refused an offer.

If they don't go the interview however, they won't be offered a place, and interviews are good practise, plus if they do the interview and get onto the course, its an extra option for them. Think carefully before blacking out any options!
  • Personally I would consider going.

A uni may look good (or bad) on paper but until he actually goes and sees the place how does he know for sure it is/isn't for him?

DD visited 9 Unis and it was the last one she saw that she wanted to go to (and got the grades). One on paper looked fantastic, but on visiting she discovered a huge pond with geese and ducks. As she doesn't like either that one got crossed off the list!

Also interviews can result in an offer if grades are narrowly missed.
  • Some universities may withdraw your application if you don't attend the interview. I had my application withdrawn by Edinburgh Napier after I asked for another interview date because they asked me to attend an interview 2 days before the interview date..

My DD has applied to 4 - there were only 4 that did the course that she wants to do. She has had general acknowledgement letters/emails from 3 of them (as she applied the week becore Christmas) but the fourth one, wrote to her yesterday inviting her for an interview. Although her predicted grades are below their entry requirements, as they were impressed with her personal statement and the fact that she has some experience, then they are willing to interview her. She accepts that if she doesn't go for the interview, then that she won't get an offer from that uni.
  • Can't she go to the interview and use it as a practice for the other uni's so if and when they offer her an interview she's ready. That's what I did some years back, five offers, five interviews, but I still took the one local to me!

I would try and persuade her to go, it will be good experience if nothing else and as others have said, she may change her mind about the uni.

When I applied (a long time ago) I didn't get offers from those I thought I wanted to go to (own fault) and the unis I did get offers from, I didn't actually like when I visited so I went through clearing in the end, did get a course I wanted but do wish I'd had more options beforehand.
